I know of ICQ, but since the various ICQ lists seem to be rather outdated, it is a hazzle to go through bunches of ICQ numbers just to learn that most of them have moved on to other games.

I would prefer to enter a game casually - when I have time. For that purpose a place like Vnet is a good thing - provided I'm not the only one going there :)

So far I mostly see 'ghosts' there. People who logged in, but for some reason don't respond. Plus a lot that log in and log out immediately (do I have bad breath? :))

I have yet to have entered more than one game with those few that are on Vnet for more than a splitsecon AND bother to reply. It's been a very meager harvest so far.

Anyway, do I have to give up on Vnet entirely?

One thing to understand is that, once a game is running, it will disappear from view and so you only ever see the people that are waiting to start or rehost a game. The numbers vary depending upon the time of day and it's best to try when both the US and Euro time-zones overlap. There's usually a game starting at about 18-19:00 GMT as the Euro players start their evening. Then, a few hours later, the US players start to become more active too.

What many must do is leave the game looged into Valkyrie while they alt-tab and do other things on their computer like email. This explains mysterious silences. The players who flit in and out of the channel are looking to see which channels are occupied.

So, just lurk there for a while and you'll soon get a feel for these things. Good regular hosts include Tomar, Dredd, Horse and Lt Dav Stirling. But watch out for imposters and chat a little before starting a game.

Often, if you see people in there that aren't talking back, and there is a game being hosted, people are probably in the game setting up before play. IMO it's silly that the people are still shown as being in the chat room in that case.

OK, looked tonight at 2200 CET.

3 ppl at first. Noone could or would host. Later a new bloke appears. Hosts, but his IP is reported invalid.

Then a bunch of guys zoom in, form a game and launch it without answering any Qs at all.

Then a lot of chatting (nice, but not what I wanted).

Later someone offers to host. A couple of guys join. Including those who formed their own game earlier on. They stay for half a minute, then bail out.

A game of three is started (1939). Fairly soon I spot an odd development: the german player is loosing all his troops to polish encirclements!!

I post some in-game messages to find out what the H is happening.
The SU drops. I stay in for a while. Keep sending messages, but never gets a reply. I check the log, but there's no evidence of the german player having left. However, the few remaining troops are all immobile.

So I quit. And what do I find now in the roster? Nothing. Noone.

It's now 2300 and my faith in this media is shattered - once again.

Well get with a group, that solves alot of problems, HoI really isn't a 'pick-up' type of game, although it happanes. ;)

What version of the game are you playong and what is your chatroom name? ill try and link up a game for you 2nite or 2moro perhaps! :)

Well, it's too late for today.

My problem is I can't arrange for games over several days or at specific times.

I have a family and no plan survives the first encounter with it :) So I really need to be able to jump a game right when the opportunity is there.

Anyway, I understand that there are reasons why ppl may have to quit. But at least they could com back and give an explanation. Not just quit and pretend nothing happened.

Very rude IMO.

Okay well you set a time and date which you know you can attend. They cant say why they have quit as they cant send ,eassages.

Unfortunately, unless you have a game pre-arranged, it takes a while to get to know people, but eventually you will get to know the regulars and will know what the best times for lurking are.

When a bunch of names appear and go into a game right away, it probably means their game crashed, and they are just going back to it quickly, and would not likely want new players anyway.

The link on my sig will take you to the HoI Player's Association, where you can find scheduled games.

Yet another weekend with very mixed experiences on VNet.

I'm astonished by the behaviour of some players there. For example at one time there were three players that had each created their own game, waiting for someone to join. They sat there for 20 mins. instead of backing out and join eachother.

Later, there was just one game formed. A few players joined, but left soon after as the host seemed to have forgotten - he didn't respond. Now, what kind of an idiot hosst a game only to walk away from it?

Also, does ppl have any creativity in screennames? I see a lot of Hitlers, Adolfs and Stalins each time. For heavens sake, thin for just 2 seconds, OK?

You guys may ask: why don't you join PA games or something. Well, simply put none of the game times offered suit me. There seems to be just one game in Europe and it's more than full. So VNet is my only chance so far.

But what a mess it is...

I know what you mean.

What game time would suit you best? icq me 57164896 and I'll arrange something, or post at the PA site, we'll get a game for you. :)

(BTW there are 2 series for Europe and 2 more starting this month, one in a couple days and one in a week or so, I'll try and get one of those series to work in a better time for you).
