Is it just me or does the updating process feel a bit more complicated then it should be?
It took me a while to figure it out without getting my maps broken, but I finally figured out how to update them.

Would be nice though if I could just hit that update button and everything would be fine automatically.

This is how you replace your preview image:

1. Subscribe to your map in steam workshop.
2. Start CSL and go to your content manager, your map will appear twice. One, probably the upper one, will have a "view on steam workshop" button and an "update" button.
3. Click the update button. A preview image will now appear with a big "update" button, do NOT press that button.
4. Instead click on a very small map icon in the lower right corner of you preview image.
5. It will open a temporary map which contains the stuff that will be uploaded: a map called "content" and a file called "previewimage".
6. Copy one of your snapshots (probably located somewhere here: "C:\Users\*** your user name ***\AppData\Local\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\Snapshots") and rename it "previewimage", paste it in your temporary map and replace the old one.
7. Go back to CSL and now DO press the "update" button and voila you have a new preview image uploaded.

As for updating your map, this is how it goes:

1. Change your map the way you like and save it.
2. *WARNING* If you have subscribed your map before you edited your map, two maps with the same name will appear in your list of saved maps. Save and overwrite the lower one in the list, saving it on the upper one will cause two different problems:
- If you restart your game after you saved, the new edited map will be automatically be replaced with the old map you once uploaded to steam workshop. You basically lost all work you did since then.
- If you saved it on the upper saved map and you immediately try to upload it to steam workshop it will actually completely destroy your map, you will NOT be able to get it back unless you made a backup of it with a different name.
3. If you did not subscribe to your map, you can do it now in steam workshop.
4. Start CSL and go to your content manager, your map will appear twice. One, the upper one, will have a "view on steam workshop" button and an "update" button.
5. Click the update button. A preview image will now appear with a big "update" button, do NOT press that button.
6. Instead click on a very small map icon in the lower right corner of you preview image.
7. It will open a temporary map which contains the stuff that will be uploaded: a map called "content" and a file called "previewimage".
8. Open both the map "content" within your temporary map and seperately open the following directory: "C:\Users\*** your user name ***\AppData\Local\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\Maps". There you will find your edited map. If you're not sure, sort by date and the newest will be on top.
9. Copy the *yourmapname*.crp to the content folder and replace the .crp file that's within.
10. Go back to CSL and now DO press the "update" button and voila you have your map updated.

Please say if I have to explain myself, english is not my native language.

I allway's recommend to make a back up of your saved map with a different name before you upload it. It's a tricky process and I allready lost a map because of it.

Sorry for another post, but editing after 10 minutes is not possible:

I want to add to 2. - if you saved and overwrite the wrong map, don't exit the map editor, but save again now on the lower one in the list. Do NOT go to content manager and update the map, first restart CSL and go to point 4.

Update process is a real pita initially.. but not so bad when you have done it a few times.
I'm sure I read somewhere that they will be looking to support proper updating of mods / assets instead of the workarounds we are currently using.

Be sure to backup your workshop page description before updating because it will get wiped!

Not if you clear the description Item name by Author in the update interface. At least that's what I learned by updating a savegame in 1.0.7b. Leaving the second box empty did not override the description text.

But yes, what a mess still.

Some updates ago I did have an update button in the content manager next to both of the maps in the list. I could click the update button without the 'view on steam workshop' button next to it and it would be updated just like that, somehow that button got removed. Would like to have it back in one of the upcomming patches. It was a lot easier that way.

Ok, I have a silly question, what if I wish to update my map but it has not been published on steam (I don't want to publish it until I am sure everything is fine and I decided to make sure everything is fine by building a city while testing..)
I don't want to lose what I have built so far, but at the same time I want to update the map itself with a couple of fixes :)

Is this possible?

By map icon and "map content" I think he means to say folder. I was confused at what map he was talking about till I figured he was talking about pressing the folder icon and going into content folder. Just thought I'd point that out if you guys missed that and were confused.

Sorry about that, "map" is Dutch for "folder". I sometimes mix the languages when typing fast.
