I now have a definite answer on this: No :)

We played last night (1.04a) with nine people in the Counts game and it worked fine.

Yes, he CTD'd no matter if we were 8 or 9 who played, so it was most likely the connection problem he reported.

So.... 8 or 9 is the limit on players? Are there general rules about which dynasty a player chooses? Like.. only one player in France, one player in England, in in Germany, ect? I guess what I am asking is.. is there some gentelman's club arrangement that players would allow for an expansion in a certin region before they attack each other? I am reading the threads to understand the dynamic....

I envision as many players as is possible.. or is too many too cumbersome? Also, if a particular dynasty is chosen by multiple players what is the tie breaker?

No limit other than amount of selectable rulers (in theory) or connection and performance (in practice) is known. So you can have more than nine if your computers and connection will run it.

Things like which dynasty to choose and so on are agreed upon for the game in question by the players involved. There are no clear cut rules for that and it usually depends on what kind of game you wish to have.

I read about the character generator your recommend. How is role play used here when the game decides death and other things... and the years go back relitively quickly?

When you choose the start up traits.. they are only good for a generation or so yes?

Well, you can think about the event engine's effects, like death, as the rolls of the dice common in tabletop rpgs and the game as the Gamemaster who runs the NPCs and tells you what the rolls caused.

Roleplaying elements are usually most used in making decisions who to marry, what to build, who to ally or who to war. And of course in the ingame chat.

Start up traits are good for the character you made them for and as parents stats have significant effect on childrens stats, good stats help your future generations as well.
