I was hoping to change the hotkey so that spacebar or shift could pause the game. Is there a way to do that? The current pause key is giving me a knot in my back from sitting with my hand next to it all game.

If you look in the Sticky thread named something like "Useful Files and Links" you will find links to two different keyboard remappers.
Just don't try and play MP with the space bar doing pause.
