Is there an error log for the game so I know what is causing the crashes to desktop? Its getting annoying not knowing what the cause is for a game in progress all of a sudden to crash....especially right after I win a nasty war.

I'm certain there is no error log. For that, you must run the game in debug mode, meaning have access to the source code. Consult Johan for that. I'm sure he'll be more than enthusiastic in lending it to you. 
I find if you rename your AVI file, and Manually save the game a lot, it helps significantly with CTD's. As a bonus if it does crash you should have a recent save.
