Dear Paradox,

Following the release of Majapahit and Leviathan, I have encountered, for the first time in 1000+ hours of play, three AI players breaking their alliances with me one after the other, because they have suddenly taken a "domineering" attitude toward me. This occurred while playing as England, shortly after subjugating Scotland. Within months of the peace treaty, Castile, Portugal, and Austria, who had all been my allies on excellent terms, broke their alliances because they were "domineering" towards me... OK, I think, maybe a quirk, so I kept playing with worse allies. After loading my save to try and keep playing today, within a month the same issue happened with all of my allies I loaded in from the previous save. Pretty sure this has something to do with the update.

Please help?

Sincerely,

A long-time EUIV gamer

I just ran into this same issue in 2 separate runs. One as Portugal, and shortly after the Iberian wedding they became domineering to me, I just thought that was kind of weird but thought maybe they just wanted my lands for once. But just recently I started a France run and was doing fine, got all but Calais from the English and even the Picardy from Burgundy but I got the dreaded Hunting accident with a 60 year old King, thus Succession war between Castile and England so I just click the make a random dynasty heir. Right after that I noticed the alliance brake from Brabant, who I just recently allied with became "domineering". Thinking "what?" a 4 province minor was domineering of me, France a Great Power and he wanted to conquer me. Uh okay. After the alliance brake the alliance brake popped up again. Now Scotland was domineering. Uh What, Why? I checked Castile and low and behold so where they. I think there may be a bug or something Why would all 3 of my allies suddenly become "domineering" especially when 2 of them are no where near strong enough to challenge me even with their alliances.

I had this also with my game as Burgundy. Castile was a long time ally and all of the sudden they broke their alliance because of Domineering attitude and I thought f*** it, because I still had my alliance with Austira and 6 vassals so I was not that afraid.
But then in like a year their attitude went away and I was able to RM and ally them again and we have been allies now for more then 100 years. So maybe it will go away for you aswell?

I feel like they implemented this to force everyone out of the European countries. I have been working on my achievements with France and I get to the mid 1460's and boom all my allies leave me. I have ran through it 3 times on Ironman and once non and always happens at about the same time.

I just had this issue myself as England in 1.31.2.

I had alliances with Tyrone, Portugal, and Castile. Maine fired, and I opted to go to war with France. I called in Castile and and tried unsuccessfully to peace out France before the War of the Roses fired. While dealing with all of this, Portugal and Tyrone broke our alliance due to their domineering attitude. Soon after I beat France, Castile also broke our alliance due to their domineering attitude.

I thought perhaps this was some knock-on effect of my royal marriages with all of the above and the War of the Roses, but their attitudes have not changed with the end of the War of the Roses and the installation of a Tudor heir.

Just had this bug right now as burgundy. Castille, Austria and Naples broke their alliance with me for no reason. Maxed out my trust with them but it didn't fix the issue.
All my allies broke off with me... Please fix.

Did your allies happen to have a restoration of union or claim throne CB? From having this happen to me and reading other reports on the forums, it makes me think that allies are randomly getting these CBs and becoming domineering.

No. I had low legitimacy that I bumped up but it didn't change their attitude and wasted a bunch of my mana... I also had low stab but getting it to +3 didn't fix it either and again mana lost.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I learned some new information that may be helpful.

Using the "Introduce New Heir" button WILL give a restoration of union casus belli to anyone you have a royal marriage with. This CB will cause any allies to become domineering and break their alliance with you.

Just happened to me, as Brandenburg, the allies in question being Austria, Hungary, and Denmark. Those who've played inside the HRE know this means my whole playthrough is basically sunk. Might as well start over as another tag. I do not appreciate ~12 hours of my time just being essentially stolen from me by a careless bug.

WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL is going on at PDX? First Leviathan is crapped out the back door half done, and now shit like this?

How can an eight year old, triple-A game (which costs ~$300) be unplayable?

The investment each player makes in EU4 means PDX owes us a high-quality, professionally-finished, artisan experience. Instead it's like a bad fast food joint: pump the product out as quick as you can and fix it later if enough people complain to impact the bottom line. I'm absolutely disgusted.

Ultimate solution :( is
unzip the savegame
open the "gamestate" file with any notepad like app (what can support ANSI encoding) - I choosed Notepad++
replace all " attitude="attitude_domineering"" to " attitude="attitude_neutral"" (or to attitude="attitude_allied")
save the file
copy the file to the zip back

resolved

For how long does that solved the problem? Won't the AI become domineering again the next time they recalculate their attitudes?

This process is breaking the save file.
