A nice thread for Italy. And here is some plans:

In the 14th century, when Visconti family had taken over in Milan, they allied up with Genoa who was competing with Venice at that time, with neither clearly winning as Venice is weaker in Aberration, due to no fourth Crusade. So, the Visconti use genoese money to take over the northern Italy at first, then with genoese support on sea, they conquer Venice. The venetian trade (aka the CoT) moves to Ragusa. Venetian possessions get divided into three: Venice itself, which is taken by Milan; Corfu, taken from Byzantium earlier, is now taken by Genoa; and Istria, where some venetians remain. After Venice gone as opposition, Genoa starts to support the Palaiologoi exiled to Crete to get more friendly emperor on the throne in Byzantion. When Genoa defeats Pisa with the aid of Milan, it gains both Corsica and Sardinia from it with Milan conquering Pisa's ally Parma. Meanwhile in Sicily, the Hofenstaufen line is not killed by Charles of Anjou, but by a local usurper with money for mercenaries provided by the pope in 1268. Then the usurper's line stays and rules the kingdom of two Sicilies, to 1419 and beyond. The kingdom is very closely allied to the papal states and when the pope excommunicates the Visconti, the Visconti respond by attacking the papacy, instead of submitting and with Genoa defeats Papacy and Kingdom of Two Sicilies, with Milan gaining Marche and Genoa Malta. Romagna breaks away from Papacy.

And then we arrive to 1419.

Hmm, that's a very cool backstory :)

How are the other countries in the area going to relate to Milan and Genoa, given that background? Are they going to start off as 'badboys'?

Sounds good, we will go with this.

New backstory and plan for Italy:

Genoa won the war against Venice in 1381. Veneto owned by Genoa or Venice a genoese vassal, we will see.

Also Sicily: The battle of Benevent never took place, the last Hohenstaufern didn´t die as the Pope simply didn´t have a french King to call for help.

Milano´s gone, zero interest.

A question about Italy: A we removing Milan completely or simply halting development on it?

If we are removing Milan, do you think it would be reasonable to divide her provinces up like so? Emila to Tuscany, Lombardia and Veneto to Genoa, Marche to The Two Sicilies, and Mantua becomes a one-province minor of the same name.

I'm not sure about the historical basis for this though... any thoughts?

And I just want to make one comment that is not intended to add any value to this discussion at all: Milan has the coolest shield. A snake with a crown. Bloody brilliant. :)

Sounds like a decent division to me, except for possibly handing Mantua to Genoa too.

Yep. That would be much cleaner and less work besides. I was originally thinking that Emilia could go to Genoa as well, but I'm not sure we should be starting Genoa off with all of the territory belonging to the classic Kingdom of Italy.

Its all a question for wiser men than me, however. :)

Milan will stay at 1-2 province, Emilia can go possibly, but I would like to retain the option to give Milano a chance, after all their shield is nice.;)

A good decision, now that I think of it. With two provinces a piece, Tuscany and Milan would make great dark horse candidates. He he he, and as long as Venice stays dead, I'll be happy. :)

So from there on Aberration went to have Swabian Hapsburgs inherit Milano (most of the time) and in fact become Milano. Then the event files stop for milano pretty abruptly

So this new Swabian Milano . Here are a few ideas. Luther in Swabia event files approached the hapsburg Duke of Swabia first. He agreed to become the first protestant country.

Since he is in Milano now it is more compplicated.
Since they, Swabia want to quite possibly make Northern Italy protestant. Then Hapsburgs have a family feud. (as per events already described. Swabia/Milano that is protestant in this Hapsburg family feud will have Milano rebel and have the deeply catholic part of the family as governors. events are needed to play out this feud. A few wars likely follow.

All this must anger Papal States supremely. having a protestant kingdom on their doorstep. At first they can try to crusade themselves. Should they not win then everyone and their mother will probably get a cb. bavaria can crusade. Northern german protestant countries probably will join Swabia. Which after this was should any of them be annihilated should inherit the rest and get shields on all of them.

this post is referenced in Swabia thread.

It's not good if all events stop if Swabia become Milan, there has to be events for Swbian Milan....
Anyway if Swabia inherit Milan, why doe it allways become Milan, really make no sense, milan is inherited but ruled from Swabia would be more realistic, but if they become Milan now and then as a b option would be nice.
