I recently started a game as Nationalist China, and things went as usual: I kicked ComChi's and Guangxi's lily-livered butts into submission, produced enough infantry to drown Japan in a sea of corpses, and kicked THEIR patoots off the mainland entirely, triggering The Setting Sun. (I think that's the event that Japan gets when NatChi kicks their butt).
After that, things were somewhat peaceful on my side of the world. WWII was going full-swing in Europe (though Germany's inability to actually take Warsaw forced me to load as Poland and disband all their units). I eventually got around to annexing Guangxi (having had to wait since some random event pushed me into a democracy), which set off Sinkiang into declaring war against me.
Around the beginning of 1941, Japan spontaneously decided to join the Axis, followed very shortly thereafter by the US aligning itself with the Allies and, naturally, putting it at war with Japan. There were some skirmishes between the two powers, but the Pacific War abruptly ended when the US successfully couped Japan.
Well, that's not entirely accurate. I mean, Japan's no longer a member of the Axis, but they're still at war with Liberia and the Phillipines. And me. (Since ComChi declared war on them out of the blue one day). I figured as long as I kept my shores garrisoned, I wouldn't have to worry about the Democracy of Japan coming to knock me down.
I started noticing something unusual when Peru declared war on Japan. I just shrugged this off, as Peru will declare war on Japan at the drop of a hat. But then Turkey declared war on Japan.
Wait, Turkey? Those dudes have high Isolationism, ever since that one leader guy died in '39 or so.
I go to check on Japan, and they have a blisteringly high 500 belligerence. As Turkey only requires 89 belligerence to declare war, it's not surprising to see why they issued the declaration. (Germany had around 100 belligerence at this point, for reference).
Later, I hear tell that FINLAND has declared war against Japan. Really, Finland? Really? I check at this point, and Japan has OVER ONE THOUSAND BELLIGERENCE. (The extent of Japan's territorial holdings, I should point out, are its Home Islands, those dinky little islands scattered through the South Pacific, and parts of the Phillipines, which it has yet to annex despite my spies telling me they have zero divisions).
It's currently April 1942, and Japan has 1603 belligerence. They actually gain 6-7 points of belligerence a DAY, so this isn't just some massively successful global manipulation campaign on behalf of the entire globe. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if even Switzerland declared war on them sooner or later.
I suppose I'm just curious as to how Japan is able to accumulate such insane amounts of belligerence. Honestly, I've had games where I conquered the entire world where I had less belligerence accumulated. Any theories?
(Oh, almost forgot: I'm running the Armageddon 1.3 Beta Patch 2).
Edit to add: Japan's belligerence seems to have topped out at 3032 and is no longer rising. I suspect this has something to do with the United States declaring war on them the second their peace treaty ran out, and Japan finally taking control of Manila, the last VP province in the Philippines. Perhaps Japan had troops there but were unable to gain possession of the province due to the American units stationed there along with their being at peace with the United States.
I suppose the United States will crush Japan like a bug now (especially since I sent most of their navy to the bottom of the sea with a massive barrage of submarines), which makes me a little sad, since I wanted to crush Japan myself. Oh well, maybe later.
I wonder if they'll retain their massive belligerence after being puppeted by the US via event...(if that event will even fire).
