I'm interested in playing as Japan in the GC. I think it would be quite fun to try to conquer China and build up my own colonial empire in Asia.
What I wonder is: Is it possible to remove the event that occurs in 1634 and Japan refuses to trade with everyone else and can Japan research and reach new technology levels? I conquered Japan with Sweden in the 1730s and by then they still had medieval weaponry..... And last of all can I make Japan into a protestant or reformert country?

Vae victis!

About Japan:

- You can change religion in the incfile only
- You CAN advance in all tech areas, You only cannot build any buildings. But the army and navy at least get better.
- If I´m not mistaken You can disable all historical events as a whole in the options.
- You can play the Improved Grand Campaign 1.5. where the whole area is much more interesting: Two additional countries, Vietnam and Thailand are there, and the knownprovinces sections of China, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam are extended, so that they all have knowledge of each other :)

I suppose you could swap Japan with another country, reassign all the provinces and leaders and rename them both. Thus you could have Japan (actually Holstein or Corsica or whatever) which wouldn't be so crippled.

Nice and widespread theory, but most probably wrong. In my editing I have noticed, that perfectly normal tags loose the ability to enable the player to buy buildings, if one places those countries´ capital in the Indochina area. So at least some hardcodedness is with the areas and not the tags...

Hartmann, have you looked into how this is solved in the fantasia scenario ?

I haven't tested it myslef yet, but the whole point of it to have 8 1 province nations start from scratch spread all over the map. Wouldn't be really fair if some of them wouldn't be able to build buildings of gain in tech while the others could ...

When is the next IGC-version up for grabs?
And which version are we up to now?
I have got 1.2 right now.

I never bothered playing the Fantasy scenario, but I think things are handled differently there (at least they should). But on the other hand I have absolutely no clue, how those restrictions can be hardcoded and yet not be in full swing for the fantasy scenario. I simply still lack too much knowledge about the inner workings of the game. :(
My observations are purely based on my experiences concerning tampering with the GC and there at least it is as I said it is (and I was really surprised when I discovered this!).

Once I get my copy of EU (and play it a bit, of course), I will take a look at the Fantasy scenario to see what the difference is. Maybe this could be the holy grail for scenario making.

Yes, maybe. But IF the usual restrictions don´t apply here (for unfathomable reasons) You have to consider, that You will have to do everything from scratch here. I have also just noticed (having had a closer look on the file), that there´s no fantasy.inc. Here it´s ALL in the fantasy.eug! Instead of an 'include' request, the info normally found in the inc follows suit. I don´t know whether this means anything ...

I understand.

I am still planning to try to make an editor for EU so I have learn all this stuff anyway. Of course, I can use all the help I can get so I would appreciate anything you can tell me. Can I send you an email to ask for information (once my copy of EU arrives, of course)?

Is there or is there not a way to edit the files so that I can play as Japan without having the usual drawbacks like inferior weapons? Or should I wait for an editor?

LOL !!!

(That was a joke wasn't it ? I mean the above thread clearly states that nobody have managed to edit it yet so you don't have limitaions, but theoretically you should be able to. It's just about figuring out how. Or did you just not even read them ?)
