Ever since the new Stellaris paradox launcher was released back in 2.4, I've been having a problem with a pop-up that just states this, and the game doesn't load. I have to quit steam to actually load it.
Javascript Error.png

This has been happening for months now, and I want it to stop. What do I do?

Almost 2 and a half months later, still having this problem. I even remember checking the file integrity a few times. Nothing changed.

Did you update your windows? Try getting Windows runtime C++ / visual redistributable.

Restart computer afterwards. Usually game installations (not just Stellaris) auto unpacks these. But not sure what happened to yours.

Also worth checking: https://windowsreport.com/javascript-error-main-process/

Also:
Thank you for the suggestions. Had Windows 10 resync time, it was off by 4.6 seconds, but that didn't make any difference.
Closed both the launcher and Steam and restarted Steam as administrator, that didn't make any difference.

Went into the \Steam\steamapps\common\Stellaris\ folder and started the launcher-installer-windows.msi and selected the remove option. Upon restarting Stellaris through Steam I was asked by the launcher to restart the launcher to update to version V2. This resolved the issue, no more suggestions of contacting support.

Uhhhhhh, I have no idea what any of that means but I had the same issue
We now have reports of this on AVG, Avast and possibly Kaspersky.

You need to make sure all these apps are in its exceptions lists:

dowser.exe (in the Steam Stellaris folder)
C:/users/<UserName>/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2020.16/paradox launcher.exe
C:/users/<UserName>/AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/bootstrapper-v2.exe

Good luck!

Hello, I'm not sure if this thread is about the exact same error, but I have just started getting this:

1611099979968.png

The error started after I subscribed to two popular mods: Stefan's Perfect Balance Mod and Starnet AI

After hitting OK, the game doesn't launch, but it hangs as a an active process - Steam thinks it's running and can't start a new instance, it doesn't appear in the Task Manager, and closing it from Steam doesn't work. The only thing that works is closing Steam entirely.

I have since tried:

* rebooting
* unsubscribing from the mods
* verifying game files using the Steam feature
* reinstalling the game
* adding the relevant files to my Windows Defender exception list, as per AndrewT's suggestion

Nothing works and I can't start the game. Please help. Thanks.

edit: Problem was fixed by going to the specified folder (%LOCALAPPPDATA%/Programs/Paradox Interactive) and deleting the 'launcher-v2.2020.17' folder. For safety, you can simply rename it instead of deleting it, or move it elsewhere. The launcher worked normally after this.

Hello there! I am having the same exact issue. It started happening this afternoon and fun fact I was playing stellaris one hour before.
The only mod I had installed was modjam 2020 but I have been playing with it for the last week without any issue.
No windows update either as far as I know.

I have since tried:
* rebooting
* unsubscribing from the mods
* reinstalling the game
* Re-adding the mods
* Deleting the launcher v2 files

For some reason the stellaris launcher seems to keep running in the background after the error and I can only close it with the task manager.
No success however starting the game yet . . .

I have Windows Defender and added all of these as exceptions. Still getting the same error.

I had the exact same issue but I fixed it!!
First go to Control panel and delete paradox launcher
Second, go to window search on the bottom and open "Run" app.
Type "&localappdata%"
And you will find the file named "Program"
Click the file and delete paradox files there.
And launch Cities again then it will download the paradox launch again and it worked for me! Good luck!

This worked for me. Steam reinstalled the launcher and it seemed to work. I got an icon in the upper left corner saying it was downloading an update to the launcher, then that it had installed the update and I need to restart. Once I restarted i got the error again, so it must be an issue with the launcher update. Hopefully they'll fix the update soon.

I'm having trouble figuring out the second part, Any help?

Nope. When you load the next time it auto installs v2.2020.17 again. Then the next time you get the same javascript error.

It's looking for this "launcher-v2-c-bindings.node", which does not exist in the location specified.

can confirm i'm having this exact issue as of today. Try to launch any paradox game and i get the javascript error. Even the same temporary fix described a couple posts up applies to me, but only temporarily. Seems like this update is broken
PS: It's not an antivirus issue; I literally turned off my antivirus and this issue persists

Same to me. Changed nothing. Starting the game is no longer possible. Using Windows Defender. Adding the 3 files to it didnt change anything.
