I have been playing around with a Japan Improvement Project for the last two years. Since I am now only using C.O.R.E. - cannot go back to vanilla - I have ported my mod over to C.O.R.E. 0.32.
What am I hoping for:
Community input to improve my mod, new ideas, interesting discussions. Maybe ... a few of my events may find their way into C.O.R.E. proper.
Where to get it:
http://www.savefile.com/files/1236288
How to install it:
Expand the archive into your HOI 2 (DD, Arm 1.1) directory. It should put files into your mod-Core2 folder and install one dummy ai file into ai/switch. This is the only thing I have not checked ...
How to uninstall it:
If you reinstall C.O.R.E. over your current installation, the mod should be gone (or disabled).
What does it do:
JIP 0.43 for HOI2 DD Armageddon with CORE 0.32
The Japan Improvement Project
Early China:
The Guangxi "war" has been rewritten, following the actual series of events in summer 1936. A war may be one consequence, but the outcome may also be historical (Canton falls and reduced Guangxi territory remains) or the Guangxi clique may merge completely with National China.
The mod models the relationship between the Mongols of Inner Mongolia and Japan in 1936, culminating in the Suiyuan campaign of later 1936. Historically, this was defeated by the Chinese, giving them a morale boost. Japan may give more support to the Mongols and achieve the conquest of Suiyuan, which may lead to an early formation of Mengkukuo.
Sino-Japanese war
General difficulty
The Soviet Union will attack if the border of Manchukuo is not well defended .... there are warning events for the player (this is disabled for AI Japan).
During the China war, a multitude of partisan events will cause supply and manpower losses to Japan. The more you conquer, the more partisan events you will get (partisans are disabled for AI Japan).
The war in China will continuously damage Japan´s relationship with the US.
Trautmann mediation
If Japan pushes for a quick capture of Northern China and Shanghai, they may attempt the historical Trautmann mediation (German ambassador to China) and try and reach a quick peace settlement with China.
This peace settlement will involve a common war of Japan and Nationalist China with Communist China (but no alliance initialy). Since this agreement is not in favour with many Chinese, the Communists will gain territory and deserters and the warlords will have to decide which side to choose (or wether to stay neutral). The Soviet Union will intervene (based on CCIP ideas) in support of Communist China and may declare war on Japan if Communist China is about to be destroyed. By that time, China may enter into an alliance with Japan.
If you improve your relationship with China sufficiently, Japan may get the opportunity to invest in China. This will improve infrastructure and ic in China at the cost of some ic in Japan (which is later returned). In return, the China trade will boost the Japanese industries and there will be opportunities to buy up Chinese companies, leading to improved Tech Teams for both countries.
Fall of China:
There is a completely rewritten fall of the dragon event chain, which gives you a couple of hundred possible ways of ruling China after the victory.
AND: ALL WARLORDS AND NATIONALIST CHINA WILL HAVE LEADERS
There will be a different investment event, which gives Japan long term advantages at the price of being weaker in the short term.
Russia war:
Deep down in this event series are some ideas and code from an early version of SMEP.
If Japan finds itself at war with the Soviets, there are three possible peace settlements depending on how far they have advanced and on the situation of Russia (at peace, at war with Germany, at war with Germany and losing). Japan should not be allied with Germany for this to fire, otherwise you have to wait for Bitter Peace.
The Japanese will gain some experience in tank design the hard way while they fight Russia.
Once a victory over Russia is achieved, there are again investement events - long term gain for short term loss.
Other stuff:
There is an Australian surrender event that creates a very neutral Australia, to prevent the powerful Japanese puppet you usually get when conquering Australia.
There is an "Axis cooperation" event chain that gives military access among Axis nations (and may be expanded in the future).
Naval:
I have taken the JIP naval construction events further and modelled the major units of the 3rd replenishment program. You can decide on large and small Yamatos or on building four Shokakus instead of 2 Shokakus and the 2 Yamatos. Some units that are currently missing in the OOB are added. While the naval construction mod is active, no BB, CV and BC construction is possible. The idea behind this is to model the limited shipyard capacity of Japan.
I have messed around with the CORE naval techs, adding improved hull and small torpedo brigades and increasing the range of the smallest type of transport.

* The mod uses some ideas and code segments from CCIP and an early version of SMEP.
* One ai file has been modified from a DAIM version.
* Event pictures were taken from the axis history forum and were converted to the right format by clanjay1989.
* Some of the China events profited hugely from discussions on the CCIP section of the forum.
