I wasn't happy with the Domination achievements. When the Dev Diary describing them was posted, I wrote in part that it had too many which "require a very large amount of blobbing. One or two of those per patch make sense, but there are far too many this time. Runs that are near world conquests get tedious for many players, myself included."

None of my suggested changes were implemented, perhaps because I made them too late in the development process. So, this time around, I'm starting early ;).

Anyway, I want to reiterate that only one or two achievements should require major blobbing to complete. Variety is key to a good set--include a couple easy ones, a few of medium difficulty, and two or three hard and or/time consuming ones.

Further, they should all involve nations that are the focus of the expansion in question. Domination's "From Frankfurt to the Andes" is a perfect example of what not to include. It had nothing to do with the content of the expansion and, in addition, required extremely unnatural play.

Finally, since mission trees play a major role in recent expansions, at least one achievement tied to the trees should be included. This doesn't have to mean finishing the entire tree. although it could. But a specific mission would also be fine.

Another condition I would like is that they aren't simple rewrites of existing achievements.

As an example of what I mean, "QuizQuiz Pro Quo" is just a half-baked, rewritten combination of "No Trail Of Tears" and "Sunset Invasion".

Plus, it being the Middle East, there's a *TON* of literary and historical nuggets to mine

Ali Baba - Have your Privateers be the leading trade power in one (or more?) Middle Eastern trade node(s) (Alexandria, Aleppo, Gulf of Aden, Basra, Hormuz)

Thousand and One Nights - Starting as Middle Eastern Muslin tag other than the Ottomans or Mamluks, become Defender of the Faith and retain it for 3 years
(which works out to a little more than 1,001 nights)
Could also be "Unite Islam, reform as Caliphate, and play as the Caliphate for 3 years", but I'm getting tired of the blobbing achievements too.

From Agrabah to the Orient - Starting as a Middle Eastern tag, own and control an area that is in the Orient (Orient being Japan, Korea, North/South China)

Diamond in the Rough - As a Middle Eastern tag, own and control Golcanda
Can also be "As a Middle Eastern tag, own and control all Gem provinces in the Levant and Persian regions"

Cave of Wonders - As a Middle Eastern tag, have a Middle Eastern Great Project at Level 3

Face the Galloping Hordes - As a Middle Eastern tag, conquer the Persian region, neither Golden Horde nor Chagatai can exist.
(This is because the Mongols sacked Baghdad in 1248)

Open Sesame - Starting as a Middle Eastern tag, build or control the Suez Canal

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel like achievements should be a reward for, you know, achieving something. I don't love the blobby achievements either, but what's worse to me are the achievements that you can chesse within 5 minutes of starting a new game, or the ones that you just kind of collect at random through normal gameplay, without ever having to plan for them or go even slightly out of your way to get them.

What I really like are achievements that require you to do something difficult but not absurd - achievements tied to surviving a difficult start, playing as an obscure tag, achieving some kind of economical or military goal...

And above all - please, enough with the achievements that only exist for the sake of a pun. More often than not, they are terrible.

Achievements that encourage (or require) the use of uncommon (or new) game mechanics I think are good.
Achievements that encourage (or require) the use of uncommon (or new) nation tags I think are good.
Achievements that are a pun, I'm not sure. Some like "QuizQuiz Pro Quo", I hate. Others, like "Sikh Pun", I'm okay with.
Achievements like "That is mine!" aren't really achievements, but they're so easy that I can't summon the energy to care.

But that's me.

There should be an achievement involving condottiere. They are so under used.
Edit: I have been informed there is already an achievement. But I still feel on the whole condottiere don't get much attention.

Please for the love of all that is good, don't give us any more "you had to be there" achievements to replicate some multiplayer game that we didn't participate in. Find some other way to celebrate multiplayer that involves, you know, multiplayer games and not single player games.

Sinbads Travels: As Iraq, be the first country to circumnavigate the world

Mushasha-cha: As Mushasha, own Cuba directly

1001 Knights - As a Western technology nation, form Arabia and employ 1001 cavalry regiments and no loans

From Sharif to Caliph - As Hejaz, unify Islam without forming any other country

Said and Done - As Oman, own every colonized province in the Zanzibar trade node before 1500

Return of the Kazars - Convert the Pontic Steppe region to Judaism while having the Steppe Nomads reform enacted

Some blobby, some not blobby, some hard, some easy, some puns, some historical references

'Hookah, Line and Sinker' - as a nation of Arabic or Persian culture, trade in tobacco while having a ruler with the 'Silver Tongue' or 'Charismatic Negotiator' personality.

The one Blobby Achievement I'd like:

Restitutor Orbis: Starting as Byzantium or Trebizond, restore the Roman Empire

Especially if these countries have the opportunity to do so with the Justinianic borders

God, Syria, Bazaar - as Syria, own all syrian core provinces (close to modern borders shape) and have max level of trade building in every one of it.

I love the pun(and the song), but this feels a bit too easy imho. You can literally make a savefile where a country you play owns all syrian cores(syrian culture at that), build the buildings and release it. Boom, achieved.

Fair enough. In that case we can make a starting condition like "Starting as released Syria in 1444..." or whatnot to prevent cheesing.

Amazing but it gonna be so damn hard cuz u will face the new mamluks/the Persia and the new ottomans so Hejaz needs missions tree/ideas/modifiers to make it possible.
You don't 'need' any of these things, and there should be some difficult achievements in the mix. Besides, Hejaz has a decent path of expansion into Yemen and then possibly the Horn of Africa, India, Indonesia... You don't have to go for the Middle Eastern empires right away. Not an easy start to be sure, but definitely not the hardest thing you'll do when hunting for achievements.

It would be nice to get a few more achievements in the style of the Finland one, in the sense of needing to release the nation in 1444, not in the sense of making your country a snake.
