After nabbing Definitely the Sultan of Rum & Uniting Islam with little difficulty in my first ironman game, I decided to aim for one the ridiculous achievements. And as ridiculous achievements go, African Power is one of the slightly-less ridiculous. I almost went with No Trail of Tears, but aside from appearing more difficult, I also doubt it would be quite as fun as uniting Africa.

Because I generally perform better under pressure, I decided to also make this my first AAR. I did play through the first century of the game in non-ironman, to experiment and to gauge exactly what I'm up against (I like my chances), but this is my first real try. It is my hope that, even if I should fail, this will make for a fun read, and hopefully others will learn from any mistakes I make.

With that out of the way, let's begin!

Okay, so we don't exactly have a booming economy here. I see hardly anything, and I literally have no one with which to conduct diplomacy. I know there are other sub-Saharan natives a short distance north, but I won't be able to see them until discovery-spread starts kicking in 50 years from now. What I really need is a colonist, which means I'm going to need a lot of admin points for my first nation idea: 1200x3, while suffering a -2 MP penalty for being sub-Saharin. Hopefully we at least have a decent admin ruler...

Lol no, and his heir is worse. This is going to be a race between me and Europe to eat the African coastline. Fortunately, the Europeans generally go for the Americas first, and don't get serious about African colonies until the late 16th century. Time is on my side. Hopefully.

On the other hand, I do want someone to take at least one province so I can westernize. The sooner I do this, the better; if I can westernize relatively soon, hopefully before the end of the 16th, I can consolidate a strong power base in the surprisingly not-terrible provinces to my north, currently occupied my Mali & company, and start making boatloads of cash via trade.

Luanda would be a perfect province for a European colony: I could completely surround it and it wouldn't block my expansion at all.

I don't know if the AI is this nuanced, but I'm hoping that by clearing out the natives, someone will spot this little gem and colonize it sooner than the others...

..and even if not, I get some army tradition for it. This is going to be an uneventful 50 years. Fortunately, the time will not be wasted. There are useful things I can be doing; mostly setting up the conditions for basic missions, and then completing them, while constantly battling natives in other adjacent provinces for army tradition. With any luck, I'll even manage to get my heir killed.

I'll be awake all night playing. When I'm finished, I'll post an update unless I'm way too tired.

Four chiefs, two regency councils, and a successful pretender (did not want, but 11k was too much for me) later, distant surroundings are coming into focus. Hausa, directly to the north, is my first target. Unfortunately, she's guaranteed by Mali. I'm not going to let that stop me; I must grow or die.

I shall indeed! Just as soon as I wade through these native hordes, that is.

Why hello, friendly white man! Won't you kindly come and stay at our luxury Luanda Resort? Guaranteed native-free. A perfect base for further expansion into the far east! You know you want this shit.

Anyway, Hausa's mighty 3k army decided it would rather chance the natives to the north than be obliterated by my 9k expeditionary force. It didn't go well for them. The natives were also a useful buffer against Mali. Too bad I had to wage an aggression war; no war goal means no ticking war score, and with a mere 7% score for fully occupying the two-province Hausa, a stalemate resulted... until Hausa peaced out on her own and got annexed. Then Mali accepted a white peace, and the plan was able to move forward.

After the map cleared up a bit more, I fabricated a claim on Benin and then rapidly subjugated Oyo. Once again, the enemy suicides into the uncolonized province full of ferocious natives. This must be an AI oversight; I'm pretty sure he was just trying to outmaneuver my stack and siege some provinces behind me. I'll have to remember to exploit this later. Is it gamey? Hell yes, but so is including this silly achievement in the game, so whatever.

Now that my tribe has doubled in size, I must decide what to do next. Hausa's two provinces are Sunni. I'm not even close to having the necessary missionary strength to convert them, and I'm not sure I would even if I could. Oyo's three are Animists, which I can convert easily. This leaves me with a dilemma to ponder. Surely remaining a Pagan is unwise, if even possible while westernizing. I could try to foment Sunni rebellions and allow them to flip my religion. That would solve the religious unity problems that I'm otherwise bound to face, as well as enable me to try PUing some of those pesky Berbers and their nigh-uncoreable provinces. On the other hand, waiting for a European to show up and going Christian when I westernize (that's how it works if you're pagan when you westernize, right? Haven't played a pagan in this game yet) could score me some even better PU's or at least allies.

Either way, this is a dilemma that needn't be solved immediately. Next stop, Kanem Bornu!

You could release Hausa as a vassal and then sell them Oyo's provinces. They should start off as the same religion as you, since they were originally from a different religion group (I think that's how it works) and they will be able to convert those provinces better than you plus will give you cores everywhere when you diplo annex them.

I'm pretty sure that heathen rebels can't change your country's religion.

As an aside, I checked the achievement's code: It doesn't say you must colonize or even own every non-wasteland province. It merely states that there must be no other state holding a full province in Africa. A colony doesn't even count!
I'm considering tackling this one myself, next.

Good luck!

Awaiting more entries excitedly! I'm on my 4th attempt of this achievement now and it's driving me nuts! Stability is always low due to negative events and you can't boost because you want to save for tech. And the lower the stab, the more revolts! Ugh!

I will follow. I think Kongo should enslave the Europeans!
