I agree about Sicily. We established a separate Sicilian culture in part because we felt there was sufficient divergence there. Allowing Sicily to found the KoI would fly in the face of this. (It doesn't stop Sicily from conquering Italy, of course ...).

And you are right about Swabia, as long as it takes the Milanese path and first forms Lombardy. So, effectively, Swabia cannot form Italy, but Lombardy can.

Will the KoI have cores on Naples/Sicily, though?

Have a look at the AGCEEP approach. Maybe just translate it straight across.
 
The historical KoI don't have cores in South of Italy and it includes all the North of the peninsula including the Papal State. I think that also the Kingdom of Sicily can found the KoI because the name Italy is referred to all the peninsula but Charles the Great succeded to conquer only the North. If he was able to conquer the South too, the KoI would have covered the whole peninsula. The Kingdom of Sicily, "was invented" by the Pope Innocenzo IIto encourage the Normans to conquer that island. Maybe, if the KoS conquer whole Italy it can create a Kingdome called Kingdom of Italy and Sicily like the Spanish Kingdom of Castile and Leon! ;)

I think that the States who can create KoI must be: "Kingdom of Sicily", "Duchy of Milan", "Duchy of Tuscany", "Duchy of Romagna (it's a Duchy or a Repuplic?!)", Kingdom of Savoy", "Duchy of Tirol (it's a Duchy or an Archbishopade?)" and "Duchy of Styria".
 
Genoa is a Repubblic! I think that a Republic can't create a Kingdom.... What do you think about Genoa that create the "Repubblic of Italy" in 1500? According to me is too ugly! :p
 
Indeed, it's more fancy to have a monarch glowing in the adulation of his people - and dont forget the crown too.

I think it makes perfect sense ...

But, maybe Genoa can form this Italy if the rebulic collpases and a monarch takes over, someone who installs himself Napoleon-like on the throne ... only by Force Majeur, of course.

Well! I go ahead with the research and now I believe that the only States that could oppose to the formation of KoI are: Papacy, Bavaria, Burgundy and Swabia.
  • Papacy because the Pope always scared by a strong Italy.
    Bavaria because the Emperor woudn't like to lose one of his crowns
    Burgundy and Swabia because an Italian Kingdom could conquer them (or prevent their expansion on Italy)
What do you think about this proposal?! :)
 
Agreed on Swabia. Of courswe, if Swabia doesn't exist because they have formed Lombardia, but have then been beaten back from their Italian possession, you will need to add Lombardia to that list.
