I have heard that the T.O. was formed by the knights. But i am not sure if it is fact or specutalitions

The T.O. was more or less founded by the knights of St. John.
Switzerland was more or less founded by the templars who made it a great banking-power.

Dark Surcouf ne meurt jamais
The templar lend a lot of money to the king of France and he did not whant to repay them. The templar where destroyed because they became banker. The knight of St john wher still fighter for the holy faith, that's what save them. The 3 orders where created during the 1st crusade. The templar where fighter and the "hospitalier" as they where named where there to be healer. They where both on the holy land. The TO was supposed to fight the heretics in the eastern europ.
All three had lots of land in europ. The templar mostly in France, the knght of st John in spain and italy (if i remember well) and the TO in the HRE.
After the eradication of the templar the knight get by the pope all of what posseded the templar. By this they became mostly French by there origin. From 1492 to the invasion of Napoleon 95% (if not 100% but i'm not sure) of the grand master of the order where French as 75% of the order itself.
