Lag issue

My friend and I started an MP game yesterday, and after a few months of playing some huge lags started rendering the game unplayable. My connection is 1024kbps/256kbps and my friend's connection is 2048kbps/1024kbps. Can anyone explain why these lags appear and possibly help me in any way?

This question may have been asked before but I didn't find any threads discussing it.

1024 kbps is ok for the host - he should also have a good machine. 256 is too little for the host - even if he has a good machine.
Dont play at fast speeds - keep it max at above normal and slower when at war.

Well, the 1024 guy is the host, I'm the slow one. But even at below normal or slow speeds my units react 2 days after I give them orders, that's way too much, isn't it?

do you play on lan or via vnet?
any programs in the background? like skype, ventrilo etc

I had the same problem with direct ip connection with my brother.

We use ventrillo to talk to each other. We both have routers as well.

Is it better to use Vnet than to do a direct ip connection?

its best not to use ventrilo or a router with hoi.
vnet or direct ip - no matter as long as u dont use ventrillo or routers.

No, but I'm not quite sure about the host (my friend)
When I hosted the previous game, he got the same lags in Feb `36

Win Live Messenger, but that shouldn't cause problems, should it?

just switch it off - though i would say that your friend must be behind a router, you guys must use some grafic pack or he or/and you have crap stone age computers.

vent and msn shouldnt cause problems with connections like that....

only thing i would suggest is to enable your routers DMZ. you know how to do this? send me a personal message with ur msn address and ill help you out
