Ok here is a few things you can try:

Have him host it through LAN. Then you join through Direct IP connection. Like you where going to join a game online using your IP, but instead type in his LAN IP, should work. IF it doesn't try doing this in reverse, with him hosting through Direct IP connect and you joining through LAN. Hope this makes sense as I can sound confusing most of the time.:D

As for pirates, either have a nice big fleet that sails around killing them, or station one galley in every ocean square next to your colonies, that should keep them at bay. Although I think that the second option is considered a exploit but not sure. I just don't pay attention to the Pirates and kill them only when I run into them.

I've had a similar problem so I think I may be able to help...

Patch 1.05 is very touchy about all players on a LAN having exactly the same data files (events, leaders and so on) in their EUII dir. If you don't have the same files as your host then the game will be greyed out and you won't be able to join.

To correct this I guess you could copy one version of the db(?) folder on to all machines on the LAN or have everyone reinstall, whichever is most convenient.

Hope that helps.

Ah, good thinking on that one, I had not thought of it. I assumed since they had allready played ten games together that they had the same events. Thank you for remembering, what this dumb old mind can't.

The particular problem I had was that one guy looked at an event file using a text editor that automatically saved backup copies of any file opened - meaning he ended up with an extra file in his events folder.

A laughably easy problem to solve (delete the offending backup), but an infuriatingly difficult one to diagnose.

Oh well, back to lurking...

Thank you for your replies. Well, we had different province, text and country files on our computers. Now we are playing again...:D.

There's another funny effect: we set our difficulty to very easy. Now we played ca. 70 years and Spain has an inflation of 1100%. Does this effect come from the difficulty? But in Singleplayermode I have never been seen this effect.

Is it right that pirates disappear if I built huge forteresses?

Wow, 1100% inflation? Is the AI running the country or is it controlled by one of you? As far as the building huge fortresses to get rid of pirates, I have never heard of that one. But maybe it's true, I don't ussually pay atention to pirates all that much, so I can't really help you there sorry.
