Today, in an utterly unwarranted act of aggression, the 1st Rasalhague Regulars raided the inoffensive world of Dante in the Outworlds Alliance! Dante of course is best known as the home of the ultra-pacifist anti-technology Omniss sect. In this attack the DCMS was trying to terrify the people of the Outworlds Alliance into becoming a Draconis ally against the Federated Suns.
The Rasalhague Regulars (Talkpolite) brought an extremely powerful raiding force: a Thunderbolt, a Catapult, and two King Crabs. Rather than try and match them in a slug-fest, the local Outworlds Alliance Ground Defense Arm forces opted for a middle-weight lance, led by a Black Knight, a Trebuchet, a Centurion, with a Locust to serve as scout. The idea was to use manueverability and the terrain to maximize Drconis losses, while at the same time holding the OAGDA's precious heavy hitters for later, more critical fights.
(I attempted to record this match using OBS, something I never used or even heard of until today. If/when I figure out how to edit it so it skips the 10-20 minutes of us struggling to get a stable connection I'll post it here. for now I'm writing this up from memory.)
The battlefield was centered around a tall mountain, Mount Alameda, deep in the desert, with a moderate sized town at its feet. Arriving from the south, the Alliance mechs opted to adopt a standoff tactic. They would climb the narrow trail switching back up the south side of the mountain. Once on top the Black Knight would cover the trail and maintain line of sight, the Trebuchet would pour indirect fire from the safety of a copse of trees in the center, with the Centurion switched between those roles as needed. The Locust was to maintain LoS on the enemy as they apporached, if possible leading them on a wild goose chase until the rest of the lance was in position.
The strategy proved fatally flawed as the last critical turn up onto the mesa proved impassable (because the map trolled me, putting the boundary line exactly too close for non-jump mechs to reach that beautiful high ground). The plan had to be modified, so that the Black Knight and Centurion took up positions on the lower slopes of the trail with the Trebuchet higher up. This would force the Draconis mechs to round the corner and climb, exposed to indirect fire they could not respond to. However once the enemy King Crabs reached the bottom of the trail there would be no possibility of escape. Thus the brave Outworlds 'warriors voluntarily "went full Alamo."
As expected, the Draconis mechs advanced in close order around the left-hand side of the mountain. The locust attempted to use its speed and cover to maintain LoS and sensor lock, but only a few volleys of LRMs were launched before the enemy Thunderbolt and Catapult succeeded at crippling, then destroying, the mech. The Combine mechs then gathered just out of sight around the corner to prepare for the advance.
The Combine commander could read a map as well as anyone, and realized he would need to establish LoS to rain fire on the Alliance mechs with his Catapult while his lethal King Crabs crawled forward to bring their devestating AC20s to bear. His Thunderbolt led the way, dashing into the open space at the foot of the trail and bracing for impact. The Outworld mechs unleashed their full force, with the LRMs of both the Centurion and Trebuchet knocking the enemy heavy mech down. The Black Knight, as skillful as it was lucky, made a called shot with her full force, triggering an SRM ammo explosion that destroyed the heavy mech. Slow clapping was heard over coms.
As the Alliance mechs pulled back further up the trail, the Kurita Catapult rounded the corner. Spotting for itself, the Catapult inflicted heavy damage, bringing down the Centurion. But return fire from the Trebuchet opened a weak spot on its side armor, and the Black Knight again managed a called shot that destroyed the torso and one of the Catapult's LRM launchers. It then retreated to provide fire support to the King Crabs. These advanced into heavy fire, but though siginificant damage was done to the lead crab's center torso the Black Knight fell quickly once the AC20s were in range. The Knight's last desperate, overheating Alpha Strike failed to achieve the lucky hull breach and ammo explosion that the Outworlders prayed for. Having spent her last LRMs, the Trebuchet then engaged in a charge worthy of any Kurita samurai. Amazingly she dodged fire from both King Crabs' AC20s long enough to strike the lead assault mech in melee twice. Neither succeeded in taking the Kuritan assualt mech down with her, and the third volley of AC20 fire destroyed the last Outworlds Alliance Ground Defense Arm mech on the mountain.
A hard day for the Outworlds Alliance. In the aftermath Kuritan ambassadors on Alpheratz insisted that the Alliance join with house Kurita in an invasion of the Federated Suns or face further attack. Instead the Executive Parliament unanimously agreed that a state of war now existed between the Alliance and the Combine. House Davion representatives who had previously been rebuffed due to the official Outworlds position of strict neutrality were asked to return for consultation, resulting in an official alliance between the two nations. For the first time since the Reunification War, the people of the Outworlds Alliance were forced into war with an Inner Sphere power. But the brave example of the outgunned defenders of Dante inspired a wave of militant patriotism in the usually peaceful people of the Outworlds. "Remember Santiago!" posters sprouted up across dozens of worlds and bands struck up patriotic songs for the throngs of recruits who rushed to enlist in the Alliance Military or their local planetary militas.
(replace Union with Outworlds, Traitors with Tyrants, and Stars with Star, and this song fits the OA perfectly)
