The new update added level commander traits. I think a few of them are pretty self explanatory on how to level them up. Terrain related needs to fight in terrain. Siege engineer needs to siege holdings. Aggressive attacker require offensive battles, while unyielding defender requires defensive. Ones I am unsure of are reckless, cautious, and flexible leader.
 
Some of those are... huh.

The forder and logistician bonuses travel speed / safety buff passives are enough that I'd strongly consider assigning an heir to just sit on armies for awhile, just to gain XP for those.

How much XP is it for level 1? Can't check right now.
