Oh...

Nuts.

She's augmented.

Did you think this would be easy, HK?

Atalyah would have loved to see this, this cooperation against the odds.

My mind sees my wife - well, not legal wife, MSI law prevented that, but in every way that matttered - again. I stare into her bright blue eyes, so rare among her phenotype. Her wry smile, her cascading braids, her rich brown skin... I find myself whispering softly. "This is all for you, Atalyah."

Death cannot stop true love...all it can do is delay it for a while.

Statement: from hell's heart, I stab at thee."

Damn it...my subconscious gave him Tudyk's voice for a reason...

The question is, which is he quoting

Melville, obviously.

Moby Dick is the literal personification of evil, as Septimus and the Eater is.

Khan quotes it trying to kill the hero.

Remember the lessons of my teacher, long ago in the oceans of Lukhuin. Feel the currents, then flow them to my design.

Always good to remember your training.

We can, must and will end centuries of oppression! Hack the enemy, find our comrades, and show them the light!

Oh, good call back to when Rivkah told him they should put lights that far down...

Naomi sighs. Rests her head in her claws. Then shakes her head, and stands. "I'm going to Gateway Control, otherwise the temptation to use my position to focus our rescue efforts on that hulk gets overwhelming."

I take her hand. "I'm coming with you."

One often meets their destiny on the road to avoid it...

Appia leans in towards him. "Shoot straight, and that could be 40,000 scrip."

A glint appears in his eye. "Lartius Gargonius, at your service."

Motivating Olinbar... ;)

Naomi smiles. "No matter what happens..." She draws her sword. "...I love you all."

:')

Buri looks at the broken Sirzusians. "All we know for sure is that there's nothing we can do about that right now."

Yup. Focus on the things within your circle of control.

Rivkah looks at me. Takes my hand. "Juno, we aren't defeated yet."

I try to stop the tears. I can't. "I just... It's hopeless. We're hopeless. We're adrift, running out of oxygen, limited supplies, on a hunk of scrap that is barely salvageable..."

She hugs me. "Pull yourself together. We're not dead yet, and we're not going down without a fight."

Fear and despair makes you want to shut down. That can't happen until you are safe...

Juno shrugs. "Well, we are dead anyway, I suppose... At least getting sucked into a black hole is a quick way out."

I look at her. "That better be black humour, or I'll send you to the ship's counsellor."

Juno stares back at me.

Statia looks at her feet. "Rivkah... Technically Juno is the ship's counsellor."

I look at Statia. "Really?"

Statia nods. "Or at least the equivalent."

I look back at Juno. I smile. "Physician, heal yourself."

Juno stares at me, then sighs. "May I have permission to speak frankly?"

"Granted."

She scowls. "I'll use a Human phrase Rivkah: fuck you."

A man laughs as she shakes her head. "Hey, that's my job."

I turn to the doorway, where my husband is standing. "Scipio!

Anger...often a good substitute for despair to get things going...

"Got 'im!"

I look for the voice behind me.

Lartius raises his rifle as his fist pumps the air.

Yes, yes you did Lartius! You will have a story to tell in bars for the rest of your life is you survive...about how you killed a high ranking praetorian!

Loving that the winner of this duel is the guy the Olinbar believe is mere cannon fodder!

Appia storms to the stairs. "There's Praetorians hiding everywhere, it is an ambush all over Gateway Control. We must secure the upstairs lounge and hope the other teams can hold their sections." She turns momentarily. "Demetrius, hack Gateway Control, Septima is breaking to retreat - we need to cut them off and keep them here! Everyone else, we hold this control room and the lounge at all costs!"

We follow her back up stairs, into a hail of bullets.

And here we see the other side of fear.

Note Appia has no wasted words, no happy thoughts. Just stress and command.

This isn't long term healthy and will scar her forever...but she must...

She must...

There's a small wait. "Use it."

Even more so...

She must...win.

:'(

The Holocron shakes his head as he turns. "Give people the chance to see anything, become anything, explore anything, learn anything, and all they do is..."

Machines don't understand.

:)

More destroyed than my last Companionship Asset. Oh yeah, I'm not allowed to think that anymore.

Oof.
:'(

Firstly, she who bats for the other side - need to make sure I get paid after all, I know what Corporate is like.

Heh. He still 'thinks like that', because they still 'think like that.'

She looks at the Praetorians, then looks at me. "Lartius, have you gone and stabbed every Praetorian in the head?"

I smile. "Naturally."

Of course. As you do...

I look at the far side of the room. "I was hers for almost a decade and a half." I look back at TSR. "I guess biont mating practices seem so strange to you?"

He looks around the room, at smashed armour, burned Sirzusians, slain allies, destroyed enemies. He shrugs. "Less strange than war."

Agreed.

My eyes open to see a Human woman, squatting down to meet me. She takes my pistol, then my hand. "I'm Fiona Abrams, Admiral Veres' taskforce. We're here to rescue you."

:')

Appia looks at her nephew. Then sighs. "I want to defend myself... But I can't." She bites her lip. "Naomi... It's that whole using other women for my own ego thing, isn't it? I might have freed my Companionship Assets, but..." She slumps. "Yeah..."

The path to full healing is a journey...the effects of this particular demon are long lasting and insidious, trapping the brain in a web of lies reinforced by powerful internal chemical processing.

Think of it as sexually abusing yourself...of your own choice...and then discovering it starts to cease being your choice because your defenses are discouraged by chemical means...

Want to know why I hate the lie?

Yeah.

"So, you turn up and offer your help, and he'll take you seriously. Someone like you could make a big difference."

I look at the name. Then back at Rod. I kiss his cheek. "Thank you."

Hope.

The good news is that my Ndbele queen has finally had her spousal visa granted. While it is of course wonderful, it does mean the next few weeks get very busy with sorting out stuff relating to your wife moving a third of a planet away on present-day capability, and that means work on Life2.0 will get delayed...

:D

Excellent!

"I will warn you once. For every weapon you fire, every boarding pod you launch, every hour you plan my destruction and not withdraw, I will purge a million Kyaese. If you doubt my resolve, then watch their fate, courtesy of a certain tool from their Human 'allies' - Zyklon-B."

Humans utterly destroyed those who used that against sentient beings. If you believe that your threat is anything other than an invitation to your complete destruction, you are a naive fool.

I think back to the footage. "Mum, you cut off his hands, lacerated his legs, arms, torso and head, stabbed his chest sixteen times and castrated him..."

She picks a bit of dirt off her claw. "As said, he deserved everything I did to him."

The reality of what we humans deserve is something so horrifying most humans never think of it.

Appia leans in. "Absolutely - it is why so many Olinbari women either turn lesbian or bisexual; the boys have their first goes on Companionship Assets who are terrified of giving a bad experience, so they are all compliments and sweetness, and then the boys think they are really good. But, they are actually so useless us girls find each other, and find out we're much better."

Sigh.

Exactly. And we do the same thing here in our world with virtual sex. Sure, the impact is primarily felt by the user rather than the used...but, it creates a strong and pervasive lie buttressed by the most powerful brain chemicals we have.

Sorry...crying again. Remember when I talked about weak mind?

I look at her. "So..." I take a deep breath. "I have a theory, which... This is kind of confirming. Humans and Olinbari really are sex addicts."

I'm not sure this is true.

It may be part of the lie imparted by our misuse of the sex act.

But, I don't think I can be authoritative. By the time I was freed from the lie, so much damage had already been done to how I think about it.

I'm not sure I could say definitively how sex without the baggage of the lies would be like...

:'(

I look at her. "You regret it, inside."

Mum sighs deeply. Takes the synthol Appia offers. "The Gaius I wanted to kill was that six foot something Adonis with his stupid eight-pack and his ridiculously broad shoulders and toned biceps and..." She sighs. "What I actually got was this slob wearing his face. Sometimes, I think of him, and wonder what the heck happened between him dating Cassia Epidius and when I met him again."

Revenge doesn't heal. It doesn't take away the hurt.

What happened to him was likely the logical consequences of choosing to make that demon his master. He was in the process of destroying himself.

Naomi is right to pity him.

Scipio smiles. "What a lovely false positive."

Indeed. This update was helpful for my spirit after looking at the impact of the demons on us.

Thanks.

So, some good news; after almost a year of waiting, my wife has finally arrived in my country. Which means that updates will resume, but equally, that they will be less frequent as after four years of long distance relationship, being together at last is long overdue.

Hooray!

Also, long distance relationships...been there, done that. My wife and I never saw each other on a Tuesday until we were married...

Enjoy it...and listen to her. She sees you as you really are, not how you think you are...and still loves you.

I look over her beauty again. "So... Do we fight and then mate, or do we mate and then fight?

She comes closer. "They did both."

I lean forward.

Heart pounding.

Our tongues entwine.

The ship spins around.

Does the order really matter, Scipio?

Scipio's face goes light. "'Statement: HK was here'? What does that mean? And why has that been written in bodies impaled on the roof?"

Nice Shawshank Redemption reference...

One can only imagine how his attack has spooked the defenders of the Titan...

Lucius looks at his feet. "Septima locked us out of the system. She retains full control of the ship remotely."

The viewer changes. Septima stares out at us through artificial skin grafts. "Shame. I was hoping for the harlot, but the harlot's daughter will do." A rumbling sound echoes through. Septima smiles. "Die."

Something he should have said immediately upon surrender. He should be eaten...

I shove a chunk of debris off myself, and see Lucius and Diana are... Well, they'll never be apart again. The rest of the bridge is melted and mangled.

Ah. Never mind.

Consequences.

"So... She dies."

Again, consequences.

That's the interesting thing to me... natural consequences are so often just. Perhaps a reflection of how the universe functions.

Leonardo shakes his head. "You are a monster." Buri steps aside. Leonardo looks at him. "Oh, is that it? You agree with me that she is such? That she's such a blood knight that she'd kill her own children to win?"

To be fair, we all are. Some just have had more opportunities.

"The point is, those Civic Harmony Officers had to effectively be able to act as a light army. And Appia's thinking to call them up."

Uhrm...not sure how humans would view this act by MSI...the guys who enforced the worst aspects of the indenture system as saviors?

She sighs. Breathes deeply. "Because he was my most regular customer and I couldn't afford to veto him." She sighs again. "I asked Virtruvius about it, and he showed me his account books. He showed me just how tight the margins were, how he only owned the contracts to us girls, and that MSI's auditors would come and work out an allowed profit margin, and then enforce it by increasing the costs of the lease. That was one of the turning points in my life... I was seventeen. I had been used as a sex slave for two years, my virginity auctioned at fifteen. And those years were full of rage at my situation. Part of why he sat me down and explained it all, he wanted me to understand that although the system was horrible, I at least had a good life here compared to what I could have and that by working my body and my clients I'd be profitable enough that he could keep me here, and that I could use my opportunity to build a connection with a client who could buy my lease and make a life for myself. But if I vetoed Gaius, then he wouldn't be able to keep me. And then my fate would rest in the claws of the market."

Damn it...

Wrecked again. :'(

Really shows how terrible MSI was. All profits squeezed to the top...damn the consequences.

Agh. :'(

I cluck. "You don't see it, do you? She will kill them all. They are dead, unless confirmed otherwise. Come to terms with that now." I slump into my chair. "Until we can change it, that is their fate."

Truth.

Sometimes the truth is awful...but we must believe it and not the lie.

He takes a few minutes to calm his nerves. "I don't know. I don't want to condemn a trillion of our people to death."

I cluck. "Then you accept trillions upon trillions will remain livestock farmed for their children as food for her export income."

Truth again.

Also, it's a lie that anyone other than the villain is killing the kyanese.

"No matter what happens, I love you all."

:')

She freezes. "Who are you?"

"Ruki Of Unity. And I am here to rescue you."

:')

He laughs. "Are you really going to kill a man, a prisoner no less, in cold blood?"

I smile. "Who wouldn't?"

Are you really going to pretend to have the moral high ground?

Heh.

Daddy gets in first.

He screams.

Comeuppance.

Tryykad looks like he's about to be sick. "So it is genocide then."

It always was.

:'(

I take a deep breath. Then look around the room. "We are going to put her down like the rabid animal she is."

Consequences.

Humans utterly destroyed those who used that against sentient beings. If you believe that your threat is anything other than an invitation to your complete destruction, you are a naive fool.
We... Didn't utterly destroy them though. A few of the top brass killed themselves, some others got captured and imprisoned in headline trials, a lucky few were ringfenced for Allied research programs and some escaped justice entirely while the bulk of the rank and file persisted under largely mere change of name.

Hell, the company that produced Zyklon-B remained in business post-war, it's chief operations officer got just two years imprisonment, and they merely renamed Zyklon-B to Cyanosil and continued making and selling it since.

We picked out the Germans and the Japanese and said how monstrous they had been while overlooking the civil rights problems in the USA, ignoring blindly the atrocities carried out by the British and French Empires and everything going on in the Soviet Union. (the Germans relied on this in fact, noting no one gave a damn about the Armenian genocide under the Ottoman Empire)

And besides, technically Septima hasn't actually committed a crime under our present laws, as her livestock treatment processes are within bounds allowed for animal welfare, and our legal and cultural systems are barely able to recognise all Humans as equal under the law. Sophont-kind in general might well face immense prejudice before reaching the point where they have the same acceptance level as a Human who merely has a different colour skin tone does today - I dread to think what Splices, Provolves and AIoids will face over the next two centuries...

There will be a lot more moments like this one in Stars Of Wonder, thankfully.

Good points.

I will preface my remarks with the infuriating reality that my national government (the US) dealt with the NSDAP and Japanese governments in a horrifying unjust way.

At no point were we going to insist on destruction of the Nazi government UNTIL our soldiers were coming face to face with the realities of the death camps...and even THEN, it took the ferocity of our ordinary soldiers to force even half measures out of our corrupt and evil government.

Our government was also directly using genocide against Japanese civilians...while simultaneously not worrying about Japanese genocide against other groups.

I live in Richmond, the home capital of a nation born purely out of the desire to exploit humans as slaves...and we never addressed that from a government perspective either.

BUT.

I am not my government. Many in my country took justice into their own hands when it became clear our corrupt leaders would not. Do not buy the lie that the government truly represents the people.

It should, but even here in the US...it mostly does not.

As for the second section...what is legal in the code of a corrupt government is not always what is right or just. An unjust law is no law at all. That should suffice in short form to cover my views on 'but this evil is legal'!

I wish I could give a long answer to these discussion points. My nation's intentional suppression of the facts of how we have behaved for most of our history is...I can't even find the words...distressing to me. Our current trajectory is not headed in places that make things better for people within it's power...and that is most of the world. I try to share what I know and what is happening with my neighbors and anyone who is listening...but the culture of the lie is so strong and pervasive...that even those who should know better only know the barest of actual true information.

Upon reflection, if I were to place myself in your story...I'm Valerius. I'm a reasonably comfortably well off Olinbar who is not in a seriously powerful position...but is also not an 'asset' in the sense of being debt controlled...I have sufficient resources to choose who I serve. And I've a history of having bought the lie. But I've been liberated from the lie...and I'm trying with my limited but still meaningful power to do good.

The reality is we do what we can for those within our power. The truth demands nothing less. However, unless and until we are granted a Naomi or Buri or Appia...my pessimistic self doesn't see good things coming for my home. My hope lies in exposing others in my circle to the truth in the hopes that the skill sets awakened will be sufficient to craft more effective solutions to the evil.

Naomi tries this time. "Buri?"

He strains. "I'm hit."

Ugh...
:'(

Naomi's face turns from weeping to rage as she looks at me. "You are in command now. My place is defending my husband, even to the last. Go."

Hydra leadership. Naomi is compromised.

:'(

A weak voice replies. "Fireball."

Buri

:')
Naomi stares. "Monica..." Runs her left eye down the scar on their hands. "Your own husband. The man you swore a blood oath with. Is this you?"

Heinrich gurgles as she squeezes tighter. Blood leaks from the side of his mouth. Monica scowls. "Our great wise chessmaster thinks she can manipulate me. Well I've got news for you Naomi, other people aren't yours to play with like dolls."

Damn the lie. Damn the demons!

:'(
I raise my rifle. Septima laughs. "You wouldn't dare. For a start, all my systems are fail-deadly. Kill me, kill them. No, there is nothing you can do. Nothing you can do to save them, nothing you can do to stop-"

Monologuing again...

And trying the lie...but we already know it's a lie. The villain is responsible...not the victims.

Sis smiles.

So does Septima. She's healing already. "Are you really willing to have their deaths on your conscience?"

I smile back. "Yeah."

Damn straight.

:'(

They box her up. Septima fixes her eyes on Sis, she's hunched in as they take her away. "From hell's heart, I stab at thee."

Naomi looks up at the displays. At the bodies. Then looks at us all. "Save everyone we can."

Weep for everyone we can't.

Well...I made it.

Mildly wrecked.

Thanks for the ride...the story...and the insights.

I've been having a lot of thinking as I've gone through...sometimes about things I'd rather not think about...but needed to.

A few things come to mind:

Freedom is having the chance to choose who or what you serve. If the person you interact with does not have actual power to choose, they are not free...and we ought not hold them accountable for acts that are forced upon them.

'I die with my friends' is a badass line that I hope I never have to use...but might become necessary.

Healing is a journey...and some wounds require constant vigilance to ensure they don't become the portal for the demons to reestablish control.

Whatever happens, I love you all.

Thank you for reading. :)

And there's more:
Mandate Of Heaven - An "Of Unity" Narrative
Stars Of Wonder - An "Of Unity" Narrative

But yeah, Life2.0 asks hard questions and deals with some very tough subjects. Mandate Of Heaven will too, as it will look at what my assessment of the accelerating rate of technological progress will introduce within the next century. I expect I shall retire to Luna or Mars, for example.

It is easy to look at the world and lose hope. But despite many things, I believe in mankind. We have taken our first step. I have a great deal of hope for the coming decades and centuries as Humanity grows from toddler to infant and infant to adolescent. Of course mistakes will happen, but we will mature. And we will walk among the stars, I have no doubt.
