Also by the way, what do you tell me if you include on the menu options of the vessels some kind of illumination? For example, navigation lights, some focus on the superstructures and masts and extensive illumination for when a ship is resting at port,(concerning CVS would be a nice effect a fully lighted island numeral and so......)

There is actually some support for navigation lights and so on in the game engine. For the gameplay, this really just influences visibility in low light conditions (well, d'oh).

It will take quite a bit of work and effort to get such a feature into the game (e.g. all lights on all models must be mapped, and light strength and direction must be simulated).

For all your military units, lights would be off at all times, so I think this feature would have very little value for the game at a quite large development cost. I agree it would be neat, but I don't think we'll model this in the game (beyond having civilian vessels with lights).

Not so long ago, I read a thriller which included naval warfare. It was spoken of in the book that a group of frigates, full lights on, could be disguised as a civilian ship. I don't know much about scripting, and things like that, but if such thing could be implemented, it'd be awesome.

Hi and welcome Dylan,

Deceit will certainly be a part of NWAC. We're working on forms of jamming that deceive enemy radars about the number and types of aircraft detected. We may also implement decoys in some form.

Creative lighting and camouflage has been used in the past to make warships appear as civilians (I think this is often unlawful under the laws of war, though). However, modern warships have such a wide array of methods to identify targets, especially within visual range, so I am not convinced it works anymore.

Moreover, unlike the real world, which is very open-ended, in a game you would actually need a user interface option (button, menu) to "make this ship look like X". The number of such options would necessarily be limited, and any opponent would be aware of all of the possibilities. This really limits the element of surprise.

But I like the idea.

While I realize the pay off isnt worth it for the game, modern navies still make use of "deceptive lighting", I spent each night on watch at RIMPAC trying to figure out who the Americans and Brits had dressed up as that night. While it is not completely effective it does add on uncertainty and time to the decision making process, are you sure that's a warship or might you be blowing a cruise liner out of the water? I hope at least there are lots of civilian aircraft and ships to cloud the tactical picture and raise the tension. Is that a gulfsstream jet or a scud and what are my rules of engagement?

The more I think about this game the more excited I get!
