I loaded up Eu2 today and the sounds for when you click on buttons or select things are gone. It's rather quiet when I play. the music works fine, but no sound is made when I get pop ups either. Am I missing something?

Make sure you have updated your operating system icluding DrirectX, and video audio card drivers.
Also try the following:
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

1) Did
2) Also

I have Dircet X 9.0b everything seems fine.

3) Killed. It's the interface sounds I'm missing the army, navy, combat and provence select sounds are there. But that's all. :(

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Check for a sound card driver update, yours is 4 years old.

You can aslo decrease the acceleration of your sound card one notch at a time and see if that helps.
You can do that on the sound tab in the Dxdiag program.

I have the latest Driver for the Sound Card.

I'll try turning down the acceleration in the soundcard.

I have some of the sounds just not the clicks or the sound thing when a message pops up.

Yup the best thing is to try different notches on the acceleration slider.

I guess the most frustrating thing is everything was fine till I loaded it up yesterday. All my other Paradox games play perfectly well.

I've tried all the notches and nothing did the trick. I guess it's not the end of the world but it's a little disheartening. I think tomorrow I'll try another uninstall/shutdown reinstall project. For some reason that seems to fix computers better.

Thanks for your help. If It works I'll let you know. :(

Some times you install some trial software or something you forget about and it interferes.

Let me know if the reinstall make a difference.

Did the uninstall shutdown, restart reinstall. No luck. Even tried it using the Cotn version of Eu2. Again no luck.

Will try unistalling a few extra programs maybe even a system restore (Ie the windows version of going back a few weeks in time). Maybe something magical will happen there it's worked on some other problems. :(

Okay I thought you had meant that you were reinstalling Windows.
Keep me updated.

No such luck with the option either. But the fun part was It caused a massive amount of Eu2 copies and HoI so I cleaned them all up (I think 5 main folders total  )

Tracked down 1.06 HoI reinstalled HoI and Eu2 and patched to current versions. No luck. It's gotten past the point that I think is fixable. I've uninstalled everything that I have installed in the past month. No luck there. I dunno. :(

The only sounds I have are the click on provence sound, along with the battle sounds. That's it. Weird.

It's the only Paradox game that is giving me any grief.

I don't understand why is it you had multiple EU2 copies?

I'm not sure. When I did the rewind thing it made an extra Eu2 folder with s few txt files in it.

For some reason I ended up with 3 HoI folders. I had 2 for a while one was for 1.06 and one for 1.06c. So now I just have 1.06 since it's more what I enjoy.

I don't understand why you would have some sound effects and not others.
Are you sure you have nothing running in the background.

If the limited sound effects means that a sound effect only plays once for a particular action (like clicking an army, navy, province, etc.), then it's a known problem, I'm afraid.

There is an incompatibility between Paradox games' sound effects playback code, DirectX and the VxD driver versions for Creative Labs sound cards, which causes the sound playback to stop after having played once in a game session. If possible, upgrade to the more modern WDM drivers, and normal sound playback will be restored.

From Goonhilly satellite earth station,

Jan Peter

Ah thank you very much. And from the looks of the web I will want to basically buy a new Soundcard in the future as the Live! cards are pretty much crap.

Ok thank you for your time. Glad to know that It's nothing I did nor much that I can fix. :D

I thought of that but reducing the acceleration has worked to cure the problem for some and it only happens to him for some sounds.

Thanks!

Thank you ,Castellon ,for suggesting taking acceleration out of Directx. The s problem of the sound effect playing only once was getting me frustrated. I happened to come upon your suggestion for tweaking Directx down in acceleration. After I turned sound acceleration completely off, the sound effects now work fine. Thanks again, Steve
