If it doesn't mess with the rest of your setup, you could try a symlink (or bind mount) from /home/alex to your real home directory. Assuming the game blindy tries /home/username, it could be fooled.

Ubuntu 13.10 is out of support for ages by now. I use Arch and I haven't got a single problem with CK2 after I got steam to work (Native or Runtime).
