Well here is my standard stuff to try first.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

In your start menu you should have an option to update your windows.
To set color depth you right click on the desk top then select properties, settings, then you will see the option to change "color quality"

I do not run with a anything in my system tray, never had a virus protetion program, and I have never had a virus in my life, and I have been on the internet since before it was called that. Now I do surf safe and my security setting are not wide open like most people but there you go.
If you are worried, simply disconect your system from the Internet while performing that test. Also I have seen Norton interfere with some programs, and it has been report here as causing problem before, which is why it is on the list.
