Hi.

First my Specs:

550 mhz intel p3
128 mb sdram
8 mb ati Xpert 98 agp 2x
Direct X 9.0b
OS: 98se
My problem:

This problem happens both when playing EU2 and HoI, and I'm getting annoyed. I'm experiencing random Lock down, which means that sometimes i can play for 2 hours, sometimes 5 minuts, I never know when it´s going to happen, but when it does i can only press the power button. Yes i have read the "infamous Inifinite LOOP AGP PROBLEM" that i could solve but uninstalling my VIA drivers, and reinstalling the originally ones, that lays on my install cd, but my drivers are directly from 98se cd, so it cant be that. I've have upgraded to 1.05c in HoI, and i have giving up on EU2. I have renamed the AVI to AVI_back, and i've tried all this again after formatting my comp.... so any other ideas how to solve this?

Any other ideas how to solve this??

You should not have VIA drivers if you if have an Intel chip, so I don't understand what you are talking about with the VIA drivers?

Make sure your color depth is set to 16BIT.
And make sure you have the latest drivers for you video and audio cards.

Hmmm i though so.

I couldn't find any VIA drivers, so I just said the other thing, so we wouldn't waste time on it.
My problem is that sometimes(often) my comp locks up. It only happens when i play HoI and EU2.
Can you tell me what the solution might be?

Btw my color Depth is 16bit resulotion is 1024x768, ive tried to disable ATI tab, but it doesn't help.

Run a directX diagnostic please and post results here.
Start-Run then type dxdiag.
Select save all information to file then post the contents of that file in this thread.

A frozen system which requires a power cycle to recover indicates some sort of memory/chipset/processor problem. The most likely cause is the dreaded infinite loop problem. Although most common to VIA chipset based systems, others aren't immune to it.

For starters, you are pushing your system rather badly here. You only have an 8 MB AGP board, and on top of that a mere 128 MB main RAM. The first one means that your video board will reserve a hefty chunk of main memory for it's internal use, to store all the textures the game's rendering engine needs. That is not something to be alarmed about. It's precisely what AGP was designed to do.

Control to that memory is regulated through the GART driver. For (older) Intel chipsets, Windows 98SE will install the correct one automatically. The BIOS setting for AGP aperture size regulates how much main RAM the GART driver may set aside for use by the video board.

This usage does have side effects that most people are not aware of.

1) The video board (through it's driver) must communicate with the GART driver correctly, and the GART driver itself must be bugfree (this is where VIA falls short, alas). Because the GART authorises the video board to bypass the processor and manipulate the main RAM directly, if either one goofs up, you can end up with inadvertently changing memory locations that weren't meant to be changed. In worst case, this can corrupt the master memory tables of either the processor or the video board. While the processor still has some sort of failsafe (you know, the BSOD's of Windows), a video board usually does not. If the AGP board crashes while in the middle of a memory acces cycle, the chipset gets blocked, your processor cannot retrieve fresh program instructions, your system appears to be frozen => Infinite Loop.

2) Any main memory set aside for use by the GART (and thus the video board) is considered off limits by Windows, and thus not available for general use. Together with reserved memory by other drivers and kernel routines, this can leave your system with a surprisingly low amount of swappable main RAM. If it's too low, then the internal virtual memory management routines of Windows can get confused and start running around in circles, unable to find a free memory page. If that happens and interrupts are disabled, then again your system appears to be frozen. Try lowering the AGP aperture size in the BIOS, but make sure you don't set it lower than 16 MB. Windows cannot handle a setting less than 16 MB. This will force less texture memory available for the video board, but makes more RAM available for general use. The downside is that textures now can get swapped to the HDD, thus slowing down your overall game performance.

3) Insufficient power distribution on your mainboard. When either your power supply or the power regulators on your mainboard cannot supply sufficient current, then too an AGP video board can crash, locking the chipset in the process, and thus preventing the processor from accessing memory. The more intense the video board is calculating, the more amps it needs. When not enough amps can be provided, the voltage drops below the threshold, and can cause any number of unpredictable actions by your system. Although it doesn't look that way, games like EU2 and HoI do stress the video processor, and thus it's power usage goes up. You can reduce this somewhat by forcing the card to AGP x1 in the BIOS.

What you need to understand here is that games like EU2 and HoI are not only main memory hungry (for both it's code, the DirectX code and the game data), but through DirectX also places a hefty burden on the internal memory allocation of the video sub system. With an 8 MB AGP board, this too means a large extra claim on main RAM.

Ok, so my system is to weak, but why the heck is then requiresments so low, and i can play games like Warcraft 3 in a framerate on 45 on 800x600. I'd rather believe a compatibility problem, than my computer is to weak.

Well, there you already have a huge difference. You don't have directX 8 or 9 hardware with your ATI card, so Warcraft 3 switches to software rendering. This means that only the frame buffer of your card gets used, nothing else. AGP isn't touched, and no GART memory is claimed.

HoI and EU2 work differently. These games don't run 3D code, but do make extensive use of large bitmaps. It is not unlikely that these are being treated and stored as texture files by your video card through it's driver. If that's the case, then you are looking at two vastly different modes of operation.

Have you tried HoI/EU2 running at 800x600 as well? A lower resolution also changes the memory usage of your card.

Also, assuming that you weren't running anything besides DxDiag, the 40 MB swapfile used is definately an indication that your system is low on available main RAM available to applications.

Try the CacheBooster from www.analogx.com to see if you can increase that by reducing the size of the memory pool Windows assigns at boot time to the hard disk cache. This can have amazing results on machines with 128 MB RAM and running Windows 9.x

Ok, i first tried 800x600.
As i can see, you are right, its a problem about my memory, because here it's not as often, but sometimes it still does it...
Ok i downloaded cachebooster, but i dont see how it can help me, besides setting max. limits. By the way my cache lvl 2 is actually on 512kb
Now i don't know what to do, it still does it, but not as often...

What CacheBooster does, when used correctly, is to tell Windows to reserve less RAM for internal use, to put aside as a hard disk cache.

Originally, Microsoft intended this cache to be flexible, in that it would reduce in side once applications needed more RAM. That never got implemented in Windows 9.x, so you are stuck with a very inflexible system, which also reduces your HDD performance instead of increasing it. Because less RAM is available to applications, the swap file is used more often and grows larger. However, Windows routes all HDD access through the HDD cache, so you get the weird situtation that because of lack of available RAM this gets claimed from the swapfile, but a large chunk of it is kept in main RAM, set aside as the hard disk cache.

By forcibly reducing the size of this cache (CacheBooster defaults to something like 5 MB when you choose the gaming profile), more RAM becomes available for general use, the swap file is needed less, thus HDD activity is reduced and overall performance increases.

Also, Windows 9.x is notorious for not coping correctly when running low on available main RAM. It's swap file logic gets screwed up, resulting in system crashes. By increasing available main RAM, you also reduce the risk for this particular problem.

Note that this HDD cache has nothing to do with your processor lvl 1 and 2 caches. This is simply a chunk of main RAM, set aside for dedicated use by Windows.

ok.
IM a very big newbie into Hardware and that stuff, but i know some programming.... doesn't matter here.
So can you tell me what I should change? And as you said there would be a risk of system crashing. If it does that, how can i restore defaults?

You misunderstood. Windows itself is prone to crashing when it's swappable physical memory starts running low. That is precisely what CacheBooster tries to solve.

Select the gaming profile. This usually reserves the least amount for the HDD cache. All CacheBooster does is to apply the changes to the appropriate registry settings, which take effect after a reboot. After that, Windows operates with the new memory management parameters.

CacheBooster itself will not run, nor is it needed to control the memory management. If you want to change again, just start CacheBooster again, set the new memory management parameters, apply them and reboot.

I tried and i didn't help. Just a minute after i started it frooze..
Now is there anyway i can restore my defaults, since i believe it's decreasing performance in wc3x(it was like when i started something, like building a building, that it made a chop, well maybe its just lag)
Any other solution?

Ok, I saw that I can't make them to default.
I'm now positiv that it was decreasing performance, so I tried something else, i tried bare minimum, and wow, I believe the wc3x is running better than before, no choppy play, much more smooth movements... so now i'll try to see if also helps HoI. By the way, could you tell me what bare minimum actually does to my HDD.

It doesn't do anything to your hard disk itself. The memory pool is just a buffer Windows uses to cache the most recent transfers (aka data) that came from your hard drive. When any application requests that data again while it is still in that memory buffer, Windows returns that copy instead of actually reading it from your hard drive again.

When you have enough memory available (read: more than the OS and your application needs) then it can increase performance.

When you don't have enough available, anything beyond what is available is claimed from the swapfile. So, if you create a large HDD cache in memory under such conditions, it kind of defeats the purpose. Because, what you save on the one hand (data still in the cache isn't read again from the drive), you throw away with the other (memory overflows into swapfile, thus increasing data transfers to/from your drive).

Damnit its freezing again, for a moment i though i could play it. Well if it can help, its usually happens when im moving units around. I'll check for drivers now, but i know i have the latest Graphics driver...

I think i got the solution, i played for like a hour - no freeze.

So here what I did, that triggered the solution. I wanted to see my job list in game, then it frooze, so i figured that maybe bagground interference could annoy my game. So I shut the Office porgram line, and there it is, no freeze.
I'll write again if i experience it!
Thanks for your replies
