OK, I'm desperate now.

First evening I played HOI2 - No problem.

Played the Ardennes Offensive all the way through before trying the grand campaign as Poland - Fine.

Next time I play it locks up (screen freezes, music stops) after about 5 to 10 minutes and has every time since.

Oddly enough I tried the Ardennes Offensive again and it was fine...

I have the latest patch and I have now installed the latest graphic and sound drivers.

I've even scanned for and removed any spyware.

I've tried changing the avi folder to avi_back (now changed back) and tried 16 bit colour depth (if I understood what that is correctly).

Still locks up.

Game looks great and I am desperate to get stuck in.

Any help greatly appreciated.

(Incidentally, Victoria used to do this as well but only after about an hour's play. I've tried that since the drivers were updated and the spyware removed and that now Victoria seems fine...)

Raedeon graphic card, nvidia sound card, athlon processor, Windows XP.

You have obviuosly seen my standard advice and tried some of it.
Do keep the AVI folder renamed, the worst that that will do is skip the intro videos for you and get you in the game sooner.

Have you turned off all your virus protection and all the other programs running in the background?

Sounds an awful lot like the infamous infinite loop problem. Do you have a VIA chipset, by any chance?

Anyway, look here for some pointers to tweak your system:

http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147489

A last thought. Since you can run a small battle scenario but not a big GC, you should consider testing your memory modules. It may be that one of them isn't 100% reliable, and since a large GC uses a lot more memory than a small battle scenario, it's possible that it tripps over a faulty memory location.

I had a similar problem with CK, EUII, amd HOI II. THe problem was more or less fixed my updgrading the "setpoint drivers" to the newest version from Logitech". While I still have problems, they are recoverable.

I recieve a "C++ page overflolw message, restart the setupoint drivers, and contiunue the minimized, but still running game." Not perfect, but works. Of course, your problem may be different in subtle ways that render my advice useless.

Thanks...

A lot of stuff to try and I'm a bit out of my depth.

I'm also on full-time childcare duties until next week so it may be a bit before I can give this my full attention.

If I can just ask one particularly dumb question for the moment:

When you say the folder should be AVI_back, do you mean "avi_back" or "AVI_back" or doesn't it matter? I've no idea whether these things are case sensitive and I notice you say "AVI_back" when the folder is currently called "avi".

Apologies if I'm being stupid...

My PC's by Evesham and they have a very good local rate helpline (so far) so I think I'll ask them about testing memory nodes and setpoint thingies.

Oh and the infinie loop stuff...

I have tried with the anti-vitus off but I don't think I've tried with it off and the folder name and colour depth changed at the same time.

I'll try that next...

Just tried it and this time it wouldn't even load the "autosave"!!!

Castellon, what do you recomend as my next move?

The "AVI folder thing" the name does not matter as long as it is changed.

Okay, so by what you are saying about the saves, it is just this one game that has become corrupt.

Now that you have changed all this stuff, like the virus protection off, the AVI folder renamed, the color depth, the updated drivers ...

Start a new game and see if the problem reappears.

Okay lets find out what we are dealing with here.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Well since the last post I have actually gone as far as to reinstall windows!!!

Thats dedication...

Played for a good half hour before lock up.

Okay everything is way out of date.

Priorities are DirectX 9.0c or above.
Then the latest video drivers.

Your color depth is reading 32Bit at the time you did the report, keep it at 16 and the AVI folder renamed, also rename the MUsic folder to Music_back or something simmilar.

OK, here goes...

When I reinstalled windows I installed the version of DirectX that was on the HOI2 disk. This appears to be "DX81" on my copy, whatever that is.

However, I have now dowloaded and installed DirectX 9.0c.

When I did the tests I had the latest graphic drivers hot from ATI as I downloaded/installed them when I reinstalled windows.

I have now installed the latest sound drivers again.

Must have missed the 16 bit thingie and have now remedied this.

(I assume this is when I click the ATI icon in the bottom right of my screen and check the 16BPP instead of the 32BPP. Please let me know if I'm doing this wrong)

When I reinstalled windows I actually had to go out and buy new firewall/anti-virus stuff etc as I had been relying on my old anti-virus and the fact that I had kept that up to date along with windows XP security for the last two years. Of course, as soon as I'd reinstalled it, my PC was compromised as soon as I tried to update them!

So I had to reinstall windows twice!

(Not strictly relevant but I felt the need to tell someone as my wife just says "yes dear" and my son can only really say "mummy", "daddy", "sticklebrick" and "all gone" - He's 17 months old. Less said about my mother's knowledge of PCs the better but she did look after my son while I did all this so I can't complain. Wife was at work before you ask)

So I turned off everything I can find that might be running with this regards (is there a quick way to do this?) and physically unplugged the PC from the internet (as my broadband connection is always open).

I then changed the music folder to music_back.

Then into HOI2...

First thing is no opening movie but I can live with that.

In fact, no music at all in the game but I'll live with that.

First try:

About 15 minutes play and then crash to desktop!

Actually I considered this progress as that has never actually happened before - It normally just locks up...

Second try:

About 5-10 mintes then lock up.

Third try:

A tiny little freeze after about 5-10 minutes.

Thought it had gone but after a second we're back - Again, I consider this progress.

Then an event message about a government change.

Then I click on the diplomacy tab for more details and it locks up again.

Any ideas?

(By the way, fully patched HOI2 again before I even started...)

I don't understand how you were compromised just by updating windows, say what you want about MS , their website is usually clean.

Anyway, I would say something is up, maybe a bad memory chip.

And if you follow my standard advice about no programs running in the background you do not have an ATI icon in the system tray to click on. ;)

You right click on the desktop-select properties then the setting tab.

Yup, but the rest of the Internet isn't.

If you are unlucky enough to only have a dialup internet connection without a NAT enabled router in between, then your system will be compromised before the first security patch has completed downloading from the Microsoft update server.

The only way around this is to install ZoneAlarm (or equivalent) BEFORE connecting to the internet.

Jan Peter

I don't know if I buy that.

Are you saying it is theoretically possible or are you saying it is likely you will get a virus.

We're going off the point here a bit but I had spyware and virus attacks pretty much instantly...

First time I restarted the computer a somewhat bizarre window opened telling me how I can remove all the porn I've been looking at from my PC!!!

Needless to say I hadn't been anywhere but here, ATI, Microsoft and the BBC.

Cheeky little cyberbuggers...

Interestingly enough the BBC did an experiment to see how long it took an unprotected PC to have to be hooked up to the internet to get a virus.

It took 8 seconds!

I'm with jpd on this one even though he (or she) has mentioned some big PC words I don't understand. :D

Anyway that problem is now resolved so back to the lock-ups:

So what exactly do I have to do get the ATI logo to go away?

Or should I just get Evesham to send an engineer around? (PC is still under on-site warranty so they will send an engineer if I can convice them it's the hardware - Which I probably can bearing in mind that I've reinstalled windows. When I mentioned memory chips to them though they reckoned I should get some "blue screen" problems if it was the memory chips... )

To Castellon: Yes, it's possible, and not just theory. In my daytime job I've had to restore numerous PC's that were fatally infected with aggressive virusses within 5 minutes of being connected to the internet.

The security holes in MS Windows are so severe that you don't even have to do anything. Just dial-in and wait. That's basically enough, sadly.

About memory chips failing. When you have a bad memory module, what basically happens is erratic behaviour. That can mean anything, really. When it happens in a piece of system level program code (Windows kernel, device drivers, that sort of stuff), that most likely will result, sooner or later, in a blue screen error. But it can also mean that the system freezes, spontaneously start rebooting, or any other weird behaviour.

When it happens in an memory area where programs tend to run, or the running programs store data, you can get crashes to desktop, the application simply stopping, or running wild. In the worst case, it will corrupt the documents or data you are working on, and you won't notice it until much, much later.

Jan Peter

If you have good support, they may be able to provide you with a little test program, that will at least minimally test your memory.

As for the ATI system tray program, there should be an option to shut it down.

Try, right-click on desktop, select properties, Setting tab, Advanced button, OPtions tab, deselect "Enable ATItaskbar Icon aplication."
