Hey everyone,

Like many others, I'm absolutely in love with this game's soundtrack and the immersive scenes it creates. I'm also a big fan of the music player feature, thanks to which we can inspect which track is currently playing

I've already saved everything that is available through Spotify, but there's several tracks shown in the music player, that I cannot find anywhere (not even when googling their titles).

Examples include:

  • "Approaching the Gates"
  • "Sunrise over Alamut"
  • "Michaelmas"
  • "Tranquil Baghdad Morning"
  • "Road to Canossa"
Do you know whether the entire soundtrack can be found anywhere, or exported through the game files?

Much appreciated!

Right, so Crusader Kings III use a third-party audio software called FMOD, which uses a technology called soundbanks. This is fairly standard in the industry, with most other third-party libraries like WWise and such. Essentially these banks could be seen as compressed .zip files but only for audio. We can then send commands to these banks such as play sound = "at_the_gates" and FMOD would handle the actual loading, playing and such of that music, while we can send parameters to the audio instance if we'd like to apply positioning on the sound or what-not. Another big use is that we can make sure that we only load in the relevant banks - such as if you have a lot of really cool but heavy music for level 43 of a video game - you don't have to load those files into memory until you're actually done with level 42.

The drawback to this of course is that it's very hard for you to export actual audio from these files. The idea is that it's not supposed to be possible for outsiders to do this.

I have the files right in front of me - and I would love to send them to you in pure .wav format, but I talked to my audio team - and I am by contract not allowed to do this, unfortunately. I have asked them to take a look over what we actually have on spotify though, because just as you say - there seems to be some songs missing.

Let's say hypothetically that you had access to a free 3rd party audio software like Audacity however. Let's theorize you opening up the Audio Setup-> Audio Settings, and then changing the host in the interface to Windows WASAPI - and changed your recording device to your headphones or speakers or what-not. Let's then theorize a scenario where you went into the game settings and turned down all audio except music - opened up the themes in the music player you're interested in -> and happened to be recording your speaker audio in Audacity while doing so. It seems inevitable that the tracks that you're interested in would end up in your possession, hypothetically.

One could suppose this might take up to forty minutes of your time, that I wish I could spare you from - but it seems to me to be the easiest solution to the dilemma, until our audio team decides to perhaps revisit our Spotify uploads or similar.

Hey JonZone

Thank you sooooo much for your extensive answer - both the technical explanations, as well as the hypothetical instructions on how to export these music files. I will certainly consider doing these steps in my imagination ;)

It would be lovely if the team could discuss expanding the music library on Spotify or offer the missing tracks another way (I would certainly also pay for it)! I think these are some fantastic tracks and would be greatly appreciated by the community.

Cheers and thank you again!

I have relayed the information! As I understand it - a lot of these tracks were deemed as "mood stings" which they didn't quite think of putting on Spotify as much as the "tracks", but they agreed that it's an oversight on their behalf!

Happy to help!
