yes,you have to click at the icon of each opposing mage when you have selected number of opponents at the world creation screen.
If you are unsure which icon belongs to which mage go the screen where you can selct your own mage and look up which icon belongs to which mage.
Rjakh is easy to recognize bc he has the same icon that he had once upon a time on master of magic, the kinda phantom like one with the glowing eyes :)

These "house rules" are working a treat and in my last game by turn 92 I have been completely overwhelmed! I think this was partly as the AI seemed to really hate me in this game so I have added one more house rule "Warmonger" that should mean this set of house rules end up being replicable difficult rather than dependant on the whims diplomatic AI brains.

There have been some other excellent suggestions but I feel the ones below give the greatest increase in difficulty without reducing the strategic element.

1. Impossilbe Difficulty
2. Zero Sum Cities (can only build a new city if you have destroyed another)
3. Racial Purity (can only have cities of starting race so must destroy any captured cities of other races)
4. World Type - Super Continent
5. World Size - Large
6. 3 Additional Worlds
7. Three oponents of races not used (will have to double up on a race if Elf DLC not used)
8. Warmonger (declare war with everyone and never ever accept peace!)

Right time to try again

If anyone manages to squish the AI with this set up I would be happy to hear the tale!

@MsCabbage

Except for the warmonger rule all this seems great.
But that's just because I enjoy the diplomacy game; even if it is quite limited.
I read one comment that said the AI doesnt expand if it's at war with you?
Not sure if that is correct....in my game I get frequent notices of cities changing hands while I am at war with the AI.

I hope you will let us know how you get on with your new house rules :)

That is interesting what you say and I will watch for what you have mentioned. Mind you I would say the worst thing the AIs can do is fight each other and basically wear themselves down so they don't present a challenge. So I guess I imagine if at war with you they are less likely to fight each other... but I report back with my findings.

Right played two games with the house rules discussed below. First game I got completely overwhelmed by turn 68 but the second game after a challanging start was sadly quite easily won buy turn 106.

2. Zero Sum Cities (can only build a new city if you have destroyed another)
3. Racial Purity (can only have cities of starting race so must destroy any captured cities of other races)

Ok some feedback.

Zero sum cities with racial purity adds additional strategy as well as difficulty - love it!

I have to say I think Large world is too small as in both games I don't think the AI had enough space to make use of all of its 'unfair' advantages. Sadly, the AI has a habit of waging war on its AI neighbour and by doing so seriously reduces its strength for the real enemy... YOU. So thus I would think a larger world would reduce this from occurring and might even allow for some warfare out in open ground rather than within the borders of a city which would be interesting in itself. For the same reason reducing the amount of water can only help this by using Great Land rather than Super Continent. This was already suggested to me so now I acknowledge the wisdom in that suggestion.

I have yet to find need to enter an additional world so I can't make a comment on that yet.

Three opponents of different races seems to be working well as you have to have different strategys to tackle each one.

Warmonger I really like as if feels 'honest'.

Good report and feedback MsCabbage :)

I wonder if one played on XL map with only one or maybe two opponents; they might have more room.
Also how about a rule that the enemy capital can only be attack after all its other cities are defeated.
(I have the notion one can defeat an enemy by rushing its capital...is that right?)
Also a rule that other worlds must be entered by a set move...or otherwise when found....and exited without plundering them for artifacts etc.
(I have the notion they wont spawn monsters unless entered; so the entered other worlds will pose another source of on-going threat for the player)
