Given they even said it was in the cards post release, I wouldn't be surprised. I just wouldn't assume it comes early.

Yeah, they said it here. But given their lack of interest to fixing CTD bugs on EU4 that apparently make Mac unplayable and are very annoying on Linux, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do other OSs.

I suppose the best way to get them support other OSs is not to buy the game. If they see that users who have played other OS versions of previous games are buying the game on Windows, they conclude there's no need for other OS versions.

Please note that I'm only stating what I consider a fact, or at least a good guess, on how the system works. I'm not asking for any action or inaction from other users. Before answering this, note that the CoC forbids calls for boycotts.

I don't know if I'd call it a boycott, but I certainly won't be buying EU5 if I can't run it. Not much of a point...

Many Linux players would try running it via proton and most probably will succeed. Wine generally is mature enough to provide near native expirience but having a native game is so much better due to occasional Wine bugs and the project being entirely focused on the graphical perfomance, what is going to happen to a CPU-limited game is unknown to me

I’m on a Mac, not Linux.

Literally everything in the message applies to Mac as well
Proton doesn’t exist on Mac. The closest equivalent Wine wrapper for games, Crossover, is nowhere near as sophisticated, it is full of bugs and generally not anywhere close to native performance. There’s three or four different DirectX to Metal translation options and frankly none of them are anywhere near reliable enough for general gaming. CPU performance is particularly rough as it also must go through Rosetta 2 translation from x86 to ARM.

It is actually. The full potential of Proton is used only on SteamOS by utilizing packages and solution that might not be installed on most other distros and even then need to be configured, Without all of that additional SteamOS stuff Proton is reducible to Wine + some additional configuration which is completely achievable by any user, let alone Crossover.
DirectX to Metal is completly separate issue which yes I have no knowledge about. What I know is that in the past MacOS supported OpenGL and with time a translation layer for Metal will be done

I've written it waay before in the thread, no Linux=no buy.
I'm not doing Proton when a previous release had native Linux and the sequel doesn't.

I've gotten completely off of the hype train, since why would I bother getting excited for a game by reading DD's for a game that clearly isn't for me anymore.

Also, isn't Paradox's newer games like CK3 and Vic3 released on both Mac and Linux? I would be very surprised if they don't do the same thing here on EU5, and if the game release has no support for Mac and Linux I expect them to add such support further down the road because otherwise this game will stick like a sore thumb imo. Vic3 plays natively on Ubuntu with no need for Proton and stuff.

Kinda feels weird that they have decided to release on Windows only, maybe they do not consider it a priority and something they can do later or sth, or maybe Mac and Linux sales were simply not worth the cost and hassle of OS support.

I'm curious if Linux players running through Proton show up as player counts for Linux or Windows when the data hits PDX? It must be Linux right? They clearly know how many players are on each OS and have figured this is the best allocation of resources, but man it still sucks.

I'm just switching to dual booting now as I need Windows programs occasionally, but I'm probably gonna be hitting 90% of time on Linux soon, and PDX games are a major part of that uptime. It would suck to have to go back to Windows for EU5 considering how much better Vic3 runs on Linux.

I guess we'll just have to stick with V3, by the time EU5 finally does come out maybe it'll be the superior game.

There are currently no plans for anything else than Steam and Windows.
As someone who has spent thousands of hours and hundreds of euros on EU4, I'm genuinely disappointed in the Paradox Tinto team for dropping MacOS support. Over the years, Apple has made porting games to Mac significantly easier, and previous titles always included Mac support. So why not this time? Why suddenly abandon part of your fanbase, and only mention it in a short forum reply?

You've been hyping this game for months and got me genuinely excited. But by joining the growing list of developers abandoning MacOS, you've lost a fan. I won’t be buying any more Paradox titles anytime soon. Is there a petition up yet?
