On Mac OS which is all up to date.

Since the most recent update (not 1.36 but specifically 1.36.2) whenever I get to around 1448 the game keeps crashing.

It looks like it's about to close the app, and then the game just completely crashes and freezes my machine to the point I have to force shut down the machine to get any response.

I can't create a bug report because the game doesn't allow me to do that as it causes the whole machine to freeze.

Any help would be really appreciated. Haven't been able to play since 1.36.2 because of this.

Any mods involved? If so please try and duplicate the issue in a campaign that's never had any mods used on it.

If that does happen, Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-EU4
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Europa Universalis IV AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam EU4 or Documents EU4 locations, before installing again.

**File Locations on Mac OS X**
The executable and DLC folder are in Users/USER/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Europa Universalis IV/
To see it go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G (ie Go To) and type in ~/Library/ .
The user files (settings.txt, error logs, saved games, gfx, mods) are in /Users/USER/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/ .

Hi,

No mods installed.

I'll do a clean reinstall shortly and try to replicate the issue. Then report back.

Thanks for helping.

Hi,

First of all appreciate it's holidays so don't expect support but managed to generate crash reports if anyone can help @grotaclas @AndrewT.

Just opened up a game and fast 5's to see if it would work after the clean reinstall and the crash persists.

Merry Christmas and thanks.

I don't have my computer with me, so I can't check your save, there seems to be a bug which causes crashes on macOS(and sometimes on Linux) when Byzantium gets annexed while they have Pronoia subjects and your exception.txt looks similar to the other ones which I have seen with this crash. Though the functions CCountry::NotifyLostLastProvince and CCountry::ClearRelations seem to be common to those crashes.

If you have access to a windows system, you could try to play past the crash there and then continue on macOS. If you don't play ironman, you could try if you can avoid it with console commands, but I don't know how exactly you can avoid the crash. Maybe it works if you use the integrate command to let Byzantium integrate the subject

@grotaclas @AndrewT

That would make a lot of sense as the crashing is consistently around 1449-1451 when Byzantium gets annexed.

I really hope a hotfix is released for this relatively soon (considering the holidays) cause it's a genuine gamebreaker for macOS and Linux users.

Thanks.

Nothing like that can happen until mid-January at best, as virtually all of Paradox are on their annual winter break. Sorry!

@AndrewT @grotaclas

I've tested this a couple of times and it seems that reverting to 1.36.1 prevents the crash from happening.

It may well be worth notifying other Mac users so they can avoid this crash themselves.

I hope that eventually in 1.36.3 this will be fixed for Mac users.

Thanks!

EDIT: I took my 1.36.2 save that kept crashing when Byzantium got annexed, played it on 1.36.1 and it was just fine.

This crash is still happening on MacOS. Running on a MacBook Pro Sonoma 14.1.1. I have attached the crash files and the game save.

Sometimes it seems to be able to get past it, other times it just crashes. It's definitely due to Byzantium getting annexed. See screenshot. This time the game somehow got past it... idk.

I tested this a lot just to see if I could find some information that would help the devs.

The only times I got past the crash is if I started as the Ottomans and annexed them very quickly (before they could make Athens a pronoia).

Interesting that you beat the crash cause in 30 or so attempts it would always crash for me.

Hopefully a fix can be found soon.

Yeah, I restarted because it was taking forever for Timurid vassals to declare independence war. Now I'm stuck again... Doesn't look like Paradox has responded to this at all... Although, after the MacOS crashes at the launch of 1.36 I'm not surprised. In the 20 or so attempts, I've somehow gotten past just the one time so it was probably just a fluke.

I've even attempted the complete reinstallation and that hasn't had any effect. So basically, for MacOS the game still is unplayable because Byz getting annexed crashes the game. I think this was more or less the same issue they were facing with the original 1.36 MacOS crashes.

Nvm, those issues weren't for EU4, they were complete crashes in Stellaris... Mixing my games up

@Travis_Bickle So, it seems the workaround...which I got to work again is as follows:

1) When the game crashes from Byz getting annexed, reload the last saved game.
2) Closely watch the Ottoman/Byz war. When the Ottos occupy the last Byz province, save the game again.
3) It will likely crash again. Reload your last save and it somehow get's past the crash.

This is actually how I got past it last time but didn't think it was correlated. Was just able to reproduce it and saved the game after it passed the crash.

Hopefully some of the dev team see this so they can try and figure out what's going on. Thanks for trying to figure stuff out. For me I'll keep playing on 1.36.1 until this is addressed just cause I dislike having to manually power down my machine.

I do hope in the future more testing is done on the iOS side of things because it's not the first time a patch/update has broken the game on Mac.

FYI the game developers do not read this forum. I assume this is posted in Bug Reports already, if so each affected person ought to add to that thread to raise its profile.

MacOS, maybe ... iOS never!

Oh man, thanks so much for solving that mystery. I could not put my finger on what was causing random crashes in the late 1440s like half the time.
Haha well unfortunately, the response from Paradox has been "deal with it until the next major update". So, since launch anyone on Mac can't access the content we've paid for... since 1.36 is required for Kok.
