I'm currently making a Mafia Mod for Crusader Kings 2. The mod is set in New York and currently, the first and only bookmark is set in the year 1917, although ideas for other time periods are welcome. I have linked and attached a raw picture of the current map:

http://imgur.com/a/tlxQA

Although it is called The Mafia Mod, I'm open to other naming suggestions as other characters and ranks are planned to be playable, such as Policemen, Businessmen and some other smaller gangs.

The following families are planned to be in the mod:
The Bonanno Crime Family
The Colombo Crime Family
The Gambino Crime Family
The Genovese Crime Family
The Velentzas Crime Family
Currently, the Corleone family and the other families from The Godfather are not planned to be included.

There will be new cultures added such as the American, Italian American, etc. As for the religions, there will most likely only be added one other, which will be the Protestant religion.

Sadly this mod is far from being playable and it will take even longer if I don't share this work with others, so I'm looking for people that would like to help me in making this Mod a reality. If you would like to help and be a part of this mod, you simply need to drop a comment saying so, and I will reach out to you.

Appreciate your time and have a good day.

Sounds very interesting. As a fan of The Godfather series I think it's very appropriate to be a concept modded to CK2.

I wonder if you could mix it up by including other American ethnic groups, like Polish, Russian or maybe even Cuban or groups from the Southern US just plain non-Americans (Sicily proper). You could also include one of these as a invasion group (i.e. Mongols/Aztecs from vanilla).

Obviously I'm interested. How else can I help?

That is a very interesting idea. Events from The World Wars, and other conflicts. Where because of these wars many immigrants from invading/invaded countries would flock to the United States, some of which would form Crime Families. Which I think is what you mean with them being the Aztecs/Mongols. That will definitely be added to the ideas list.

As for helping you are most welcome to join the modders group, which currently only consists of me. Just hit me up with a message. But any ideas such as the one you suggested above helps, so thanks!

I don't want to steer you off-topic too much but thinking about this concept reminded me of Predator 2 (odd I know). If you've seen the film, besides aliens hunting people, one back story is that Rastafarian Jamaicans are pushing the Mexican Americans out of the crime scene in near-future Los Angelos. Just that concept alone might be an interesting addition to this mod idea.

What are you doing with cultures religions and societies? One idea would be to make cultures into, well, cultural/ethical groups, societies into structures such as crime organisations, political associations, companies etc and religions into ideologies.

Also what is the granularity of the map going to be? I.e. what are province and holdings going to be mapped to? Would be interesting to design what role each holding type is going to play.

Edit: oh, another wild idea: use diseases to represent police operations. A character going to seclusion would be a character withdrawing from criminal operations etc. Of course that would condition what hospitals and "disease resistence" are "translated" into.

Cool idea I definitely saw someone else try this a few years back i guess they must of gave up.
Well, that's a shame, let's hope this does not come to that.

The first glance I had was to just use religions and cultures normally. First generation immigrants from Italy would simply be Italians and then the second generation would become Italian American. The religions would just stay Catholic, Protestant etc. As for the structure of the organized crime, it would have to work simply from traits, mafioso, consigliere etc.

I can not give a full comment on provinces as for now since it is not entirely decided how that will work. But again, taking advantage of governments and trade outposts in the game.

And the diseases being police operations is definitely wild and interesting, will have to test that out.

I remember seeing an idea along these lines floated a while back, I don't know if this is connected to that at all but great to see something like this actually getting made.

Should cops/law enforcement be treated as a disease/plague or religion? Or should they be like Viking raiders?
I would rather see police as unplayable characters representing neighborhoods outside the control of the crime bosses. That way, there can be event chains for corrupting and subsequently vassalising them.

If police are treated as the new China or maybe a Society, what should count as a religion or disease in this type of mod? I wonder if the mayor or political groups in the neighborhoods/counties could be religions.

I like the disease raid idea taking income away from criminals but the cops should also be represented on the map at various police stations then those guys would join a society maybe once the new update comes the mayor could use the off map china thing

Religion could just be religion, as @ArthodGDT says in the OP. An interesting twist on this could be altering the relative importance of religion and culture; e.g. Italian, Irish, and Hispanic crime families are all likely to be strongly Catholic but they still won't get along with each other. This could be accomplished by literally swapping culture and religion in the code, or preferably by a more sophisticated series of modifications to raise the importance of culture and lower the importance of religion.

Alternatively, religion could be replaced entirely with stuff like Omerta. Making the Police a separate religion would make it easier to code them, corruption could be represented with the secret religion mechanics.

I don't know about disease representing police raids, I'm just not sure how easy it could be modded into such a form.

I do like the idea of using the China mechanics to represent the Mayor and, by extension, events in the "legitimate" world. The way I picture it, this kind of mod represents criminal territories which may not necessarily be known (certainly not in great detail) to the ordinary people who live there. So the city keeps on moving, and those events are represented by the "News from China" events and the other elements of this mechanic.
