Okay, since you have been registered here for well over a year, I assume this is a recent problem and that you were able to play Paradox games before.
So what changed in your system recently that they no longer work?

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread

Yup you did not even have to go that far. :)

DxDiag Notes
------------
DirectX Files Tab: No problems found.
Display Tab 1: Problems were found in the system registry. Details are available in the saved text file. You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version.

unistall the DirectX and then do a fresh install... I had the same problems as you and that solved them...
I think that is what the last two guys were saying. :)

well, not excatly. Just reinstalling DIrectX (as they suggested) doesn't help, I tried it and it game still CTD. I don't know why, but sometimes reinstallation of DirectX doesn't solve all the problems and "clean" reinstall is required...
Reinstall to me means Uninstall and then reinstall it!
Logically you cannot reinstall something that is already installed. :D
That would be repairing the install or correcting the install or over installing. :)

I've got far too much stuff on it to lose it all
That should be a wake up call to back stuff up. ;)

Another option is to just do a repair install of windows, that will not gas your programs or data.
But what happened when you installed DirectX again, did it still give you the same errors?

Well, that is some silly argue we have here don't you think.

Still, reinstalling (for me) means installation over something which is already installed (you can like install windows OS (clean, new install) or reinstall windows OS (you already have windows installed but you decided to say reinstall them to solve some problems...). Besides, "jpd" too (to who you refere in your post) wrote;

"Your DirectX installation is incomplete. Try reinstalling it by running the DirectX setup again."

It' doesn't really matter in the end, the point is that "deathsai" here is having some problems, which happens to be the same as I was having...
There is no argument, I think you failed to notice the smilies in my post. ;)

I will add that link to the usefull tools sticky thread.

I knew you could I just never trusted them. :)

You do have to make sure the particular program will work with the version of DirectX you have installed.

Have to wait for Spricar to answer that one I have never used it.

You really should have a copy of the CD though even OEM manufactors that preinstall give you a copy of the cd or make the CAB files available.

I did say make the CAB files available, which any reputable dealer will do.
That way you can still do a repair install or in this case be able to reinstall the DirectX.

So basically the contents of the Windows CD are on the HDD somewhere.

Not great and not something I would agrea to, but you do have the option not to buy from that dealer.

Don't know what to tell you then. :(

Try that program that was suggested and see if it actually requires the CD. or if you can just point to Direct X 8.1 assuming you have a game CD with it on.

Most likely it is as I thought. There is a version that some dealers install when they do not provide a CD. THis version makes the CAB files from the CD available on the HD.

So you most likely have these on your HD. You just need to find the path. Search your drives for I386, see what comes out.

I would go with this one.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\

This is not a CAB file though so what I said before does not apply.

I would complain to your dealer than and ask them how to proceed.
THey will be able to advise you of the proper proceedure.

And if you have no CD because you are a member of the High Seas Illegal Adventure Core. Well I cannot help you with that either. :)

If they sold you a licence it will be on your invoice.
If it is listed there and you did not get a CD then they are responcible for helping you out. If it is not listed there then you got scammed with a Pirate copy.

Umm, how is he supposed to do that when he cannot get by the I386 question?

I386 is part of DirectX???

As for picks you must upload them to webspace then link them in your post using the image tab.

Which was my point, that having access to DirectX files will not help him.

The registy could be checked for the path that the install was done from that might shed some light.
