From time-to-time, my game map changes to shades or grey/black, and the map mode icons at bottom left are disabled, making game play very difficult. Anyone know what's up? Thanks.

Thats a new one for me, but several of us have experienced the map freezing in one of its modes, Area, region, etc, until the game is saved and restarted. That problem went away for me when I got updated drivers for my video card. Thats probably the first step . . .

Thanks. Saving and restarting sometimes works. I use a laptop, and driver updates are at the mercy of Fujitsu, not ATI. 1year after purchase, no update available...

Why do you have to use Fujitsu drivers?
It is an ATI card right? it is the same chip set as on other ATI cards right?

I would try the ATI drivers or third party up to date drivers.

I have a Gateway with a Radeon Mobility 7500 chip. Gateway has not released an update in years and if I try to install the ATI driver it says it can't install and to check with Gateway. Then I did some searching on the internet and found some independent drivers from people like DNA and Omega. This all happened because Civ4 would not run on my computer. Downloaded and installed the Omega driver and it worked (though it runs a bit slow). It also seemed to cure the map issue with HOI2

Thanks for the confirmation, I don't see why the ATI drivers would not work but I figured if they did not then the third party ones would, that is why I included mention of them.
