Well, if they're already on the map, then they're not going to be changed (if past Paradox games are any indicator). Once the map is completed, I've never seen them make any changes to it based on requests from the forum....

Shouldn't be very hard to research them. I'm sure forum could be of help.

No, only incorrect ones... ;)

We do loads of research during the beta, as well as a fair amount of (sometimes heated) discussions over this very matter. Simply put, we betas do our best, but in the end some disputed province names are simply not going to satisfy everyone...

Ah, you gotta love consistancy!;) :p :D

People get too picky about maps and names.

Unfortunately, the research made by betas sometimes has a subjective influence. I will not argue about province names as it is pointless. When I saw for the first time the map for Victoria, I got frustrated to say the least, but this will not make be less willing to play the game. I will just say to myself that it is a kind of fantasy map.

The thing is, a province name can't be right in everyone's language at the same time. There are a lot of provinces, especially in Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Asia Minor, and Iberia that changed hands during the timeframe of the game, so how are the game designers to decide which language to use for the province names?

Sounds harder than it is.
While powers holding those provinces changed, people living there didn't. So all you need to do is name those provinces the way natives were calling them.

My own solution to this problem would be not to have any names on the map, but rather a "hovering mouse icon-name" so that the province names could be edited or even changed dynamically through events (as in, Paphlagonia becoming Candar after a century of Turkic rule)

No, often the people did change, gradually over time. Asia Minor is a great example of this, as people changed from Greek to Turkish as the Turks gradually conquered more and more land. The names of many places changed from Greek to a sort of Turkish version of that Greek name. I'm not as well versed in the area, but I'd be suprised if a similar thing didn't happen as Germans moved into Polish areas as well.

the names always a a reson why they are named as they are. and dont think that the betas do not discuss this point ad nauseum (however you spell it :p), its always "A should be called B", "No! it should be called C", "No A is accurate, but for province #2" and so on. We are doing our best, but like someone already mentioned, we cannot satisfy EVERYONE. Besides, editing province names is very easy, editing the MAP is not. so do some editing on your own and you can live happily ever after. for all i care, give finnish names to algerian provinces :D

define "correct"

In almost all maps around here, there's german names for everything in present day Poland and eastward.

I think in one sense, although doubtless he was not speaking of this, correct could be making sure that provinces named after cities are in the right place geographically. I'm fairly certain that such was not the case with Samara and Ufa in EU2.

Does it mean Eastern Europe will have german names in CK? Why not use local names for that period.

That too.

Could it be possible to post the map before the game is finished so that forum people could do some quality control (like checking names & geography)? I'm sure that map designer and betas are doing a great job but they simply cannot compete with the power of the all-knowing Forum : )

I don't see this happening I think there are a LOT of provinces in the game and that would take way too much time. It just makes sense to me to call the provinces by their most modern names in the games language. but that's just me.

All that would do would start another endless argumant thread like the one in the EU2 forum about provinces in Hungary, Romania, etc. etc. etc.;)

LOL

It's always a fun time during the discussions concerning the exact "local names for that period". Any area that changed during the period will cause endless discussions over what form of the name has priority. Do you use Greek or Turkish names for Asia Minor? Hungarian or Romanian for Transyvania? Arabic or Spanish for southern Spain? And on and on and on and on...

I resent that...Transylvania should have bulgarian names...they ruled it for a certain period....:) ....

Most provs have been researched by "native" betazoids. Of course there is an inbred problem: names and places have changed since the CK era, and one will always find some mistakes.

But I do have to say that everything looks very nice so far and Paradox has been VERY patient with us betas regarding prov names...:p
