Map Question

Just beginning, and haven't figured this one out, despite hours of studying. I'm playing Turkey. When I go to the Political Map, my provinces have my shield in them (green with a crescent moon). My question is: Why do other countries/provinces show my shield in them? At first I thought it was religion, but now I know it's not. Then I thought it was provinces of nations who have a Casus Belli against me; but I've found that's not it either. The only consistent thing seems to be that they are all in what I could define as my 'sphere of influence'. Yet I didn't see anything like that in the manual. Can someone tell me what the answer is?

Those are part of what could be considered your 'national territory.' You should have a Casus Belli against the nations where those shields are.

Could it be said then that these are provinces my country has claimed some sort of divine right to? I seem to remember one of the diplomacy options being similar to that.

It's in the manual, check again (can't tell you which page as I don't have the English version). Look for core/national provinces.

The provinces with Turkish shields are Turkey's 'core/national' provinces. A nation has a casus belli against any other nation that possesses one of their national provinces and when a national province is annexed it doesn't have the 'nationalism' revolt risk that other provinces will have.

Divine, dynastic, national, natural, historical, strategic - one or a combination of those. Whatever works.

I seem to remember one of the diplomacy options being similar to that.

I believe that would be the option to claim a throne by right of ancestry. One of my personal favourites, and a surefire way to ruin your relation with another country (at least in most cases). It's not related to the core province issue, though.
