Hello

I am having a successful game with Massalia, I even beated the Romans in a war thanks to my alliance with Macedonia and thanks to barbs who plundered Italy while I was at fighting legions in southern Gaul. On a sidenote I have earned 250 gold by killing these barbarians who plundered Italy :)

So I managed to take 2 provinces from Rome, including Etruria and its iron. I went to 100% in war success, and only took 2 provinces + tribute.

So now Rome wants its revenge and the Macedonians cant help anymore because Romans possessions in Illyria are no more. This war is winnable imo, if it wasnt for my constant poor performances in battles, that could be explained with my army composition. I suffer much more losses than Rome, even though we both have crap 5-6 generals. As Rome doesnt have iron anymore they only field light inf and archers + 1/2 horses so I could win this easily with my +10% discipline in heavy inf as national idea, and the fact that my armies are 7 heavy infantries for one/two archers.

My question is what kind of troops would you take in my case? I have access to everything besides elephants, and I rely heavily upon mercenary troops which makes cavalry very expensive.

Well, can't give precise advice, but from my personnal experience, the AI tends to spam Archers and these just take appart more "rationnal" armies. Guess it's some shortcoming or bug of the game... You can still win, but you'll suffer massive losses. Does not make sense.

Yes, archers are a pretty good choice, though I would agree it's not an especially "realistic" balance.
