What is the maximum number of participants in a multiplayer match? I read in various HoI2 game reviews that it's supposed to be 32 (whether such a game would actually work in practice is another matter!). However, in the campaign screens, only 10 players can select a nation, and 20 in the 1938 campaign. So that seems to limit the amount.

Is it possible to get to 32 players, and if so, how? Does anyone know the correct, official maximum number?

It's 32 but this is not very practical for internet games where 10 is about the most that most hosts can handle. I don't have much experience of LAN games but suppose that the higher bandwidth of the LAN would remove one bottleneck. But the host PC might be challenged by this in other respects and so should be a high spec machine - a dual processor with lots of memory.

The 38 scenario was expected to be popular for multiplayer games and that's why it allows for more countries. The number of 20 was chosen as a reasonable compromise between graphical clutter and ample choice. Some MP players have modded the other campaigns to allow more players in those too.

I'd quite to try a game with 32 players some time but fear that, with so many players, it wouldn't get very far as someone would be losing their connection or quitting every few minutes. The game Diplomacy allows for this, I gather, by having the AI take over immediately. Unfortunately, HoI doesn't have this feature yet and it usually necessary to rehost whenever you lose a human player.

In part thank God. I would hate to drop off from a game and upon returning found out that the host only saved after a couple of days --> thus the ai redeployed my whole army to kingdom come... shudder

If I go to the bathroom for a couple min and internet gets disconnected, AI better keep its grubby hands off my country. It's like having a 6 year old that comes and plays on your computer when you turn your back.
