What is great about doing a modern day scenario mod is that you can have lots of fun trying to figure out what happened next. Keeping it "real" is the only restriction.
For historical mods, yes you can always try different paths, different leaders, but you are still going over "history". With a mod set in a time period of "a few years from now", say 2022, your imagination can let rip.
If I was doing a 2022 mod, I'd have Trump retired on medical grounds by Christmas 2017. President Pence takes over...

North Korea is too real at the moment, so I don't know what I would do with that.
It is Trump backing out of the Iran deal which starts the process of his retirement. His closest "ministers" stage a quiet coup. That's Tillerson, Mad Dog and the chief of staff guy.
Britain goes for a hard Brexit, and very quickly becomes a very small power, losing their UN security council status.
Merkel is assassinated by a person that she allowed into the country on refugee status.
Turkey becomes a strong ally of Russia, with China and Iran. I mean it leaves NATO.
Europe realises it is under a strong threat from the "Middle East". Will there be a muslim invasion of Europe?

I think Putin would be assassinated by a radical group and Medvedev taking power would be probable. Two routes could happen. One would be a civil war and Medvedev loosing power, the second one is the ambitious Shoygu makes a coup.

South Korea joins, but most of the allied forces are not willing to aid them. Meanwhile China proclaims neutrality, but they are starting to send "volunteers" and equipment to North Korea in violation of the ceasefire by the US.
Britain could be saved by a new Dominion economic ground, in which Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zeeland etc. would not impose tariffs on dominion nations and the trade could flourish. (There are already talks about this, but I don't remember what was the name for it.) So Britain could go this way...or not.

as much as it sounds interesting, why do we have to only have mods based off of world leaders, i.e. the Putin mod, the McCain mod etc. in the modern era, I mean I have an idea based on what if the Soviets won the Cold War. it is just an idea based on the excellent game Crisis in the Kremlin and my multiple playthroughs of both the original and the remake.
At least I don't have to make the Great Meme War mod like I had thought about doing

Great Man history at play. Of course, it's also easier. A USSR winning the cold war mods history would have to fundamentally change what living in the USSR and the USA was like. To the point that I'd argue would be to unhistorical to be really all that enjoyable.
You know what, these Putin/McCain/Trump mods are going to be irrelevant in three years. Because once Kanye Wesy completes his Kanye Quest for the White House, no one will be remembering those has beens.

I still make leaders and ministers, for smaller countries, radical factions in civil wars and some improvement in Europe. I always hope that a Modern day mod will continue the old traditions. My greatest sadness is, that most of the modern day mods have only a smaller number of events and even lesser number of alternate history routes.

I start a to play McCain Mod and I see the amphibious assaut ship can't load land units just open to the db/units/division_types folder and go to escort_carrier-type(line 539 with Notepad). Change escort_carrier by transport.

You had to start that Iraq ground war. Complete air supremacy wasn't enough. You take away the most important options.
