After upgrading to 1.04 I've seen a number of crashes. The system will hang about 5 minutes into the game (clock stops moving), after 30-60 seconds there is disk activity, then a Windows error message about being low on virtual memory followed by a game CTD.

I installed Cacheman but didn't see any improvement other than getting a nice graph of the problem

ram.jpg

System is Athlon 1.3GHz with 896 MB of RAM on an Asus motherboard, running Windows 2000 with SP2. Only background app is a firewall. Problem only started with 1.04 IIRC. Problem has also been seen with 1.04 on a laptop (IBM Thinkpad T22, Windows 2000 with SP2, 512MB RAM, no background apps).

I've seen crashes after a full uninstall (uninstall, then delete HOI directory structure) followed by installing HOI NA version + 1.04 NA patch, no mods. However this particular problem is currently seen with some mod files installed. While I can remove those I would prefer to keep them ;)

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? I'll get latest nVidia Ti4600 video drivers and reinstall DirectX 8.1 but haven't got much hope that it will change anything. Did something change with 1.04 that could affect RAM usage?

Try renaming your AVI folder to AVI_back.
Most likely not the problem but let eliminate the obvious first.

Renamed AVI folder to AVI_back, still crashed. Please note edit of my first post, ie that while I've seen crashes with only HOI + 1.04 patch this current crash with the virtual mem error is with a mod installed. I reverted back to default files and ran a game for about 18 months (10+ minutes) with no crash, indicating that the source is the C.O.R.E. mod.

I'll go through the mod files and see if I can narrow this down, any hints on what could cause a massive RAM usage is of course welcome. Leave this thread here for a little while and I'll report back with what I find.

I was going to suggest that since others useing the CORE mod have reported the same thing.

I have noticed something rather similar.

Back with the 103b patch, there would be a memory spike right before a crash.

It is almost like a run-away memory leak.:(

Were you using any mods, like CORE.

same problem

I have the same problem. i have a AMD 1,4 Ghz 5 gb free disc (windows xp) and the CORE installed. the time freezes and everything stop. I checked the task manager and my cpu usage had gone up to 100% and and commit charge was up to 1000mb and rising( im not sure what that is but its usually stays at 128 mb) this happened in march 1938 in the game...maybe after 30 mins of playing.

Please make enquiries with the authors of C.O.R.E.

Paradox cannot be expected to check faults with Games that have 3rd party Mods on them.

Only report faults here and in the Bug forum with *unmodded* games.

Well, after spending a lot of time testing with getting crashes almost all the time in April to June 1936, I finally took all the C.O.R.E. files and moved them into the main game directory, then ran the game without mod-dir. Ta-da, no crash. Ran it up to 1941, then restarted and again no crash.

Perhaps we are using mod-dir incorrectly, perhaps there is a bug in how mod-dir works. Again, any advice is appreciated (is there any debug parameter that can be used?) but you can go ahead and close this thread as "Problem caused by user mod" I think...

Ask the experts in the editing forum, Havard would be a good choice.
