Mercenaries defecting while on ships causes crash to desktop

version 1.02b, Steam.

I hired the "Victual Brothers" mercenaries, and loaded them on to the ships that came with them. I almost immediately ran out of money and I got a message telling me the Victual Brothers had decided to seek employment elsewhere, possibly among the other participants in the war against Poland. The soldiers on the boats defected to Poland, but the boats continued to belong to me.

The game then crashed to desktop.

I was not able to reproduce this, it worked just fine. May have to do with the version of the game.
