After much experimentation in my current game, I've finally gotten my messages set up exactly the way I want them. Are message settings saved (as I suspect) on a per game basis or globally?

If the former, is there any way to make the settings in my current game the default ones?

Thanks.

Yes, I've noticed that. But when you resume a different saved game, it will use the settings from that game, as opposed to the ones you just changed, right?

Would be nice if there were some way to say, "Use these settings in ALL games, old or new."

Ah well.

They will apply to all games, new, old, saved .. until you change them again. I think that's what you meant by "global."

It depends...

config.eu, in the EU root folder, contains your message options. I don't know what else.

Save files contain difficulty level, game speed, whether VP's are tallied, etc.

It's useful to save off config.eu incase you reinstall EU. Or better, if you introduce a friend to the game, you can give them your config.eu so they don't have to suffer the wacky default message options, and tediously change them.

Well, this is odd then, because I went back to an old game I had saved before I set the messages the way I wanted them, and it had the old settings, not the new ones.

Suggesting to me that there must be _something_ in the saved game files about it. Maybe I'll do some hunting, and report, if anyone besides me is interested.

Well, I'm reporting anyway, even if no one is interested :)

I figured it out. You know that second .cfg file that gets saved for every one of your games? That would appear to hold your message options for that game (don't know what else, it isn't a text file).

What I suspect happens is this: whenever you change your message settings, it saves them to config.eu, and when you start a new game, since there's no associated .cfg to work with, it uses the ones there.
If you resume a saved game, it uses the settings in the appropriate .cfg.

But what you CAN do, I discovered, is delete that file (I just renamed it, just in case) and the game doesn't mind, it will use config.eu. So that's how you can change settings in an old game to match more recent ones that you prefer.

Very nice info. I keep most of the save files when I'm playing a game - I can get rid of the .cfg ones - makes for a cleaner folder.

Crash games

Something else, since we are talking about the engine, I have a Dell PII 400 MHZ, and I LOVE EU, but unfortunately, for one reason or another, the game sometimes slows down after 30-60 minutes and needs to be restarted then otherwise gameplay suffers, music turns bad and response just boggles down. Also, sometimes in the middle of an exciting game, I suddenly look at an empty bureau PC desk and the music continues although the game has totally disappeared. I am happy that there is a yearly save option, otherwise I would never make it to 1792. I have upgraded with EU 1.09. Does anybody have the same, and how can this be solved???

Can you say 'memory leak'? The doco for the 1.09 patch sez "A problem which caused severe memoryleaks in the endgame has been eliminated.", but apparently some remain. (& no, you are not alone, several others have the same prob, there are a couple of threads on this topic in the support forum.) Someplace(s) in the game code are not returning RAM to the system when they are done with it. After this happens enuff times the system memory manager is forced to begin swapping to disk more & more often, this is the 'slowing' that you are experiencing. One thing that will help this is to make sure as few things as possible are running concurrent w/ eu so that it has as much RAM as possible to play with. When you start experiencing your 'slowing', save & reboot, it will only get worse. Making sure you have a fair amount of free disk space for your windows swap file will probably help. Of course, adding more physical RAM to the system will help the most. :D

good luck,

John J

Thanks, but I always play without any programs being open. The strange thing is that sometimes it doesn't happen, I can start a saved game and play perfectly for hours (unfortunately doesn't happen a lot) but it usually happens that I restart after a yearly save after about 2-3 years. This is really something that should be on a nice to have list, rather then basic changes to the game that I think is brilliant. Am playing Holland (of course) with Holland dowloaded scenario for the GC starting 1492 as a single province, but please CHANGE AI TO NORMAL! (crashed and burned the first time, France was not happy me changing religion to Reformed, they came with an invincible army and slashed through my new 6 provinces)

I have 128 RAM, and a LOT of free space on my harddisk.

It is possible that there is a compatability problem between the Holland scenario and and EU patches. As I recall, the Holland scenario (by Oranje if that is the one you are using) was created a long time ago, and may have included some scenario design techniques that have proven to be bad.

An alternative to that scenario is the IGC. It includes variants that have a free Holland at the beginning of the game. Check out the "download IGC" sticky thread in the scenario forum.
