What do the military units in the game actually do? Do I, for example, get a bonus for supply if I have lots of light cav (foragers)?

Currently, it seems to me that 5:1 guard:horse guard art combo is good enough that I dont need to bother with anything else.

So, do the units have some special effect on the combat systems?

Okay, rephrasing:

Since manpower is the single limiting factor for any major power (I never had problems with cash), what is the most efficient conversion of raw manpower into attack stats in the game? And is there any gameplay reason not to go with that combination (guard+art, I suppose)?

Well other combinations allow other traits in battles.

I think its a debatable consensus that heavy use of guards and artillery with cavalry gets you the best bang for your buck. But attrition and destruction will cost you dearly!

Personally I prefer lots of cavalry, lots of artillery and line infantry. Guards are too expensive for my liking.

I would agree with you. A large guard army that needs manpower replacements can hurt.
