I've been knocking around (again), this time trying to recreate Pearl Harbor. But I've noticed that its frustratingly difficult for the Japanese fleets to actually reach Hawaii. I've tried readjusting the composition of fleets, relocating the fleets' bases, and other tricks, but I can't seem to move ships close enough to Hawaii to actually perform a sneak attack. I'm not exactly sure if the tech the ships start with allows movement far enough from their bases to enact a 'recreation' of the Pearl Harbor attack. Learning new tech and rebuilding a fleet from scratch to incorporate the new tech by December 1941 is daunting, if not impossible. Am I missing something?

You're not going insane. I just opened the 1941 scenario in FTM. The strike force begins on Dec 11th on a zone that it cannot possibly otherwise legally reach. Did you try looking at just the max ranges of the individual ships?

...edit....then I rebased it to Wake Island and all was fine.

The Akagi is one of the starting (1936) aircraft carriers and was one of the 6 that attacked Pearl Harbor. Since that tech accounts for 1936 (or previous) era tech, I thought the range issue had to be something unexpected like Basing, Spotting, Naval Underway, or port size where that fleet left/was based.

In my most recent save (27 August, 1941) (prior to joining Germany at war), the Akagi has the following characteristics: Engine - 1934; Armor - 1936; Hanger - 1919, exactly the same as it started. The other carriers had the exact same Engine and Armor years, but the class IV carriers had Hanger ratings of up to 1936. (Hanger rating shouldn't affect the ship's range, I'm guessing). The Carrier Crew Training and Carrier Group Doctrine are both 1941 level, from the same named techs on the Naval technology (doctrine) page. From the port in Kanazawa, I could send a single carrier (with no support vessels) to Naife Seamount, but not to Western Hawaiian Ridge. Light Cruisers from the start of the war had no chance of reaching the Hawaiian Islands.

I just found a reference to the launch point -- Hitokappu Bay in the Kurile Islands. I'm guessing I need to investigate that in the game as my next step.

Pearl Harbor occurs in the game as an event, since it's not possible under actual game mechanics for the player at the tech levels available for the timeframe. The AI is not bound by the same range restrictions as the player, so it only matters if the player wants to play out Pearl Harbor with an actual attack.

Apologies re my first reply. I have since realised that Wake Island is USA territory, but taken by Japan in the FTM scenario.

I can though, reach near to Pearl Harbour from Kwajalein. I can get to the actual sea zone at Pearl when basing from Maleolap.

Although this will give a surprise attack. It still doesn't necessarily mean the AI will have the USN fleet at Pearl Harbour for the attack?

Precisely.

Kiril Islands doesn't have a port, so I'd have to completely restart at 1936 to build one. This game limits many naval operations by the base where the fleet is based. HoI3 doesn't have the mechanisms necessary to invade Hawaii as a surprise attack that I can see. Invading any alternate port locations (Wake, Johnston, Aleutians) directly involves the US into the war. I suppose I could try to try to take some UK ports, but that too is not exactly historical.

Thanks for the input on this, but I've given up yet another fool's errand.
