Torkel...I'm guessing from your "location" that you have the Scandinavian release of the game. Please see this post in the FAQ. Scroll down the post to the section thats titled "Scandinavian Installation Problems" and follow the directions there first. If that doesn't solve the problem, check the other suggestions in that post and if you're still having problems then please post your system details, etc. as per this sticky.

I'm quite sure we had this issue before, but I can't find it using the search engine :(

I just spent an hour looking fairly carefully back through possible threads in the last year or so and couldn't find a reference to data3.cab anywhere so that thread's gotta be an oldy (or I missed it). When I get home from the office this evening I'll have a closer look.

Since you've tried doing the install a couple times already I think you should completely remove anything that's been installed to date and then try again from the beginning. Follow the instructions here to make sure it's completely removed and then try reinstalling. Use the default install path and "recommended" install if at all possible in case there's something strange going on with an alternate path. Make sure you're logged in as administrator both for the install and the patch install as well.

Also...what drive letter is your CD-ROM?

it was in the very beginning of my active role as a moderator here... c.a. november or december 2001, no latter than that.

No dice...can't find the thread at all. I did run across one interesting one where there was an issue with some game controllers (a joystick in this case) interfering with the installation for some completely unknown reason.

Torkel: do you have anything like that attached to your system? If so, try unplugging them and then doing the install, but before doing that make sure you do the uninstall procedure first in case some of the files are still lingering from the first install attempts.

I just had another idea as I drove home...

Are you running Win 2000 or WinXP? If so, are you logged in under administrator?

Thanks guys, I was really frustrated at this as I has only removed my first inastallation a couple of weeks ago.

It all works now, MrT got it right on the first try:D

btw- I (being a long time lurker:)) remember this problem had come up before and did a few searches too, before posting. Nada is what I got too.
