AI missions

Austria's just in the lead-the next in the list has about 230.

I suspect that I must be playing with some option others don't, eh? Dynamic missions (?) perhaps-the fact is that I have never played a game where the AI nations don't end up with mission victory points, and they're a lot lower than my score because I assume the AI is using them properly and getting the majority assigned them at random.

That's why I've posted before on threads like this that the AI gets missions, as I've never understood how they couldn't!:D

Exactly - I've definately seen the AI have mission victory points in the break-down after you complete the game. The AI players usually get a small but respectable number of VPs from it, probably totally at random.

Calais

I actually got "Keep Calais" as a mission from Henry VII last night. Quite sensible, I thought. It almost made up for him penalising me for not discovering Hudson Bay before my first explorer arrived.

It makes sense, but is probably one of the tougher missions! On the hardest setting I almost invariably lose Calais when playing England since I don't like to spend a lot of money kissing up to Spain.

Another that makes sense is conquering Gascogne, but is pretty tough.

What I don't understand is why "keep France out of the British Isles" etc. is worth so much - sure, failing should be a big negative, but it is pretty trivial to achieve.

It's trivial for us at the start, but England is supposed to be so weak at the start vis-a-vis France and Spain that it is meant to be a big deal for the AI.

Gets a bit silly later though.

There's always one missions "Keep X out of Y" and there isn't really any other area besides "British Isles" that you could give a mission to England, in the early game. Once you've gone discovering stuff you're more likely to get "Keep France out of Caribbean" or something similar.

There are usually a others for England such as "keep France out of Italy" or "keep Spain out of Germany" (or something like that).

Though quite hard, those missions make sense since they portray the attempts nations made to keep the balance of power. Something like that should be worth lots of vp, but the British Isles are too easy to defend.

I've never seen those. I'll take your word for it that they're in there :)

I do vaguely remember getting "No France in Netherlands" once. Since I owned Artois, Luxembourg, Flanders, Caux, Picardie, Champagne and Nivernais I figured I might be able to do that :D

Ha. Child's play. As Russia I've have "keep Spain out of the Caribbean" since 1492, way before I even knew where America was.

You do tend to get them when you don't even know where the area is (technically). Missions should be tied in some way to your geographical knowledge in any upcoming EU2.

Playing as Denmark, I once got a completely rubbish mission.... "No Spain in the Caribbean". OK, we had no colonies there, our fleet was in a right state and we were close to bankrupcy... and the mission, if accomplished, would give us 30 points or so. Yihaaa! I was all over the place with joy. Strangely enough, the monarch had not been diagnosed as terminally mad. Needless to say, I failed miserably at my attempt to keep Spain out of the Caribbean, and ended up with a navy even worse off than it was. The randomness of these missions is somewhat striking, in my opinion. But then again, kings should have ambition, eh?

I like playing with missions, but I agree that many of them are just plain stupid. So...

What I like to do is, when the Monarch suggests something ludicrous, i.e. No Spain in Carribean etc., I tend to pick one of my own that I know is easily accomplished, i.e. Keep Moscow, Anglia, whatever, to balance the inevitable loss of VPs from not being able to accomplish the Monarch's mission.

This way you do not lose too much from a moronic Monarch, but, with a little self discipline, you do not find up getting cheap VPs every five years. I think it balances things out a bit.

A very fair strategy. Actually missions don't matter that much to me. Excluding those points I even seem to be consistently able to push ahead of Spain within thirty or forty years of the start these days.

I just like racking up the points totals!!!:D
