I've been porting over my total-conversion map mod from CK2 to CK3, using rewinged's blank map as a starting point, and I now have enough of Western Europe done to show it off! Right now it has just Britannia + Francia + Italia + HRE (excluding Bohemia and Austria/Carantania), but I hope to have it eventually cover a similar scope to vanilla CK3.

The county colors you see above are taken from vanilla, with a couple exceptions (I assigned my own colors to Ireland from the beginning, and I gave a couple of HRE counties their own colors too), so you can get a fairly good idea of what areas I've added the most provinces to. (There are some vanilla provinces though, like Schmalkalden or Coburg, that didn't really have a clear counterpart in my map so their colors went unused, so it's not a perfect comparison.)

Note that this map is extremely unpolished. Most counties only have a single barony, and most of the character and title history isn't done yet. Also I haven't figured out how to edit the 3D trees so the Sahara is currently a forest. Just a minor inaccuracy ;)

ATTRIBUTIONS before I go any further:
- Credit to the Diadochi Kings team for the base map.
- I made use of Elvain's excellent work here in mapping France, Bohemia, and Poland.
- And, of course, credit to rewinged for creating the blank map I used as a base.

To all the people mentioned above -- Many thanks!

EDIT 10/24: Note that there are now 2 versions: one says "Large" at the end. This is the 14336x8192 px map, which is mostly here as a test.

EDIT 11/24: Updated the regular file to include Egypt, Arabia, and Persia. The large file is unchanged though and does not include those areas.

And, as always, any feedback is much appreciated!!! If there are any inaccuracies, omissions, or other suggestions, please do not hesitate to tell me!

Thanks,
Trinculo

OK, update time! I haven't heard back from rewinged yet, but I went and removed all of his/her assets (mostly gfx) so I think I can go ahead and add a download link to the mod. (although there are still a couple of folders labeled "test") As such, the download link is now attached to the main post.

I've also expanded the map to include Poland, Bohemia, Pomerania, and the various marches like Meissen, Brandenburg, etc, which I've grouped together into the kingdom of Sorbia. I'm not entirely satisfied with that setup, but I couldn't think of a better alternative. I don't have much expertise in this area, so in addition the provinces might not be that great. If you have any suggestions then please send them my way!

Will you add a lot of more Counts? Like the hohenzollern and others?

Are you referring to the titles themselves, or to the characters holding them? Because I've added loads of counties, Zollern among them (although I think Paradox actually added this one into vanilla CK3 too), but I haven't done much with the character files yet.

Most major dynasties of the HRE such as Hohenstaufen, Wittelsbach, Wettin, Sponheim, Kyburg, etc. all have their own counties, and lots of minor ones too. There are also a few free imperial cities, although not too many because a lot of them had very small territories or were also seats of prince-bishoprics or feudal lordships, etc.

I love this, I could help with Pomerania, Sorbia and eastern Saxony :)

I'm back with another update: I've added Spain, Hungary, and Carantania. (Still no Portugal though.) Western and Central Europe are now almost complete! Behold:

I've also dipped my toes into the character history files, so that the counties of Wettin, Northeim and Beichlingen (both held by Otto von Nordheim, duke of Bavaria), Calw, and Goseck are now held by the right characters. Needless to say, there's still a lot more that needs to be done, but it's a start! In the future I want to look into maybe modding in feudal contracts to make Goseck a palatinate (its counts were Counts Palatine of Saxony during this period), or make Meissen a march, etc.

Anyway, all these changes are included in the new-and-improved version, available to download attached to the main post! Let me know if the link isn't working or if there are any major errors. Enjoy!

This looks really amazing. Looking forward to it being released.

Approximately how many extra baronies would you have added? (This is pure curiosity)

Just checking on compatibility, Have you only touched the landed_titles within the common folder? Asking because when I downloaded the zip, there seem to be a lot of files, but most are same as the vanilla game. Is there any reason you kept them in?

I could try to help with e_russia and stuff around it but I'm no designer at all so it would be more like info-help)
And - as you seem to know yourself - single-barony counties are obviously suboptimal.

Aaand I'm hyped for this mod. Really looks great!

Only thing that worries me so far is that you add more details to a much smaller map than vanilla. IMHO you might use at least the same map size so new details and additions are not too tiny. You can even have it bigger since you cut some useless parts.
Good job on the map setup itself!

There are currently about 2000 baronies on the map. Of these, the vast majority are individual counties, probably somewhere between 1600 and 1700.

The numerous files in the common folder is something that was originally part of rewinged's blank map. This is because replace_path doesn't work in CK3 to overwrite vanilla files; you have to do this manually instead. So events and such that reference vanilla titles or regions, etc. were removed this way. I've deletedsome of these blanked out files so that the game loads the default vanilla ones instead, but not all of them.

Shouldnt whole Upper Austria belong de jure to Duchiness of Austria instead to Salzburg?

Great work so far, awesome!
Yes, you're right -- I'll have to change that. I think I originally was trying to follow this map of early gaus where that area isn't shown as part of Austria, but it was indeed Austrian for much of the CK3 period.

Any help would be very much appreciated! Even more so for regions like Russia that I know less about.

Yeah, the size issue has been a major concern of mine from the beginning. I saw this thread a while back which indcated that it may be impossible to make this map as big as I'd like. I tried rescaling it to 14336 x 8192 but had serious problems in doing so; I couldn't click on any provinces and the map looked like this:

I've shelved the resizing project for now, but that definitely is still something I want to do at some point.

It’s definetly possible, I got a map exactly the same size working... the trick is to update all the necessary files, only limit at the moment seems to be that the height can’t exceed 8192, but I don’t think anyone has hit the width limit yet.

I’ll attach the list that’s present in the modding discord.

Update: added Wallachia, Moldavia, and Galicia-Volhynia

Galicia-Volhynia is still very much a WIP. I'm very happy with the southwestern part of it because I was able to find some good maps on this site, but for the rest I had to rely on maps that don't match my projection and thus got kind of distorted. There are probably also a fair amount of provinces that could be added, especially in the north. Finally, I'm not sure what spellings to use for various provinces: should Berestye be renamed to the more familiar Brest, should provinces in modern-day Poland use Polish names or stick with Russian/Ukrainian ones, etc.

Regardless, what I've got is good enough to be published, so I've updated the main post so that these additions are now included in the download. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for providing the list! I changed the "world extents" modifiers in the defines and the weird graphics issues went away, but I still can't move the camera further north than y = 4096, or further east than about x = 6400. (This was happening before I changed the defines as well.) I'd expected this to be caused by the world extents but I guess this isn't the case. Has anyone had this happen before or knows what might be causing it?

As I mentioned elsewhere, there's a huge problem with Ukrainian titles that they reflect later changes, such as Boryspil instead of medieval Borispol. (Written) Polish arguably changed less.

I think it's a form of Web Mercator, but a bit different from the one used by Google Maps and such. The base map I'm using is copied from the Diadochi Kings mod for CK2. In any case, the projection matches this image, which they used as their colormap (or a slight variant of it) and which I've used for making my own adjustments.

Speaking of adjustments, I've expanded the map further north and east to cover all of Scandinavia and Bengal:
2020_10_14_2.png

2020_10_14_3.png

Of course, it's not perfect, and you can see that there's no heightmap for the new areas, but it's a big step regardless! Let me know if there are any coastline errors -- I did Bengal by hand, but Scandinavia got generated automatically in Gimp and the result was kind of blurry. Åland, for example, was a peninsula attached to Finland. I fixed one that by hand, but I'm sure there are others.

Finally, here's a sneak preview of Byzantium that I've been working on:

As usual, let me know if there are any errors or omissions, or if you want more screenshots or have any other questions!
