@Andon Thanks for the heads up, I actually did come across the ship names being too long before but I got lazy and then forgot to take care of that :p but I'll see what I can do.

And yeah I guess it's not much a mini-mod (though I guess it's still a light mod in terms of gameplay impact) but I don't think I can change the name of the thread.

@Andon Huh I just looked into it and I didn't realize you could actually split up the defines file now, essentially. I kept thinking it was like in CKII where there's one big honking defines file so changing that would be a compatibility issue but thankfully seems PI has made things easier in Stellaris. I'll set it to maybe 40 or something then to be safe.

VERSION 1.3.6 IS UP - DOWNLOAD ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP HERE!

New version up. I've also replaced the old screenshots with new ones, because why not.

Manual download in first post of course as usual.

EDIT: Fun side note - I discovered the existence of the so-called Markov generators, which if you don't know basically is this thing where you put in a bunch of words, and the Markov generator will make a bunch of random made-up words that follow the same patterns. This will really help me create fantasy namelists in the future, and in this update I've tested it to make the Tocharian handmade namelist.

Changelog for Version 1.3.6:
  • Added seven new namelists: Argonian (TES), Cantonese (Handmade), Hurrian (Handmade), Indonesian (Real), Old Chinese (Handmade), Polish (Real), Tocharian (Handmade)
  • Added Indonesian and Polish names to CANS’ human namelist
  • Added new species name for randomly spawned AI Empires using the vanilla Mammalian and Humanoid namelists
  • Added new names to the Asian-American namelist
  • Changed SHIP_NAME_SIZE_MAX in defines to 40 (from 26)
  • Fixed a couple of typos in the Venetian (Real) namelist
  • Fixed missing bracket in elder_scrolls_species.txt

Grave of the Fireflies? That's a nice reference there.

Yup, glad someone caught that one, it's one of my favorite movies and a very sad one of course. Half of my nebula names are just references or anagrams of references haha.

VERSION 1.3.7 IS UP - DOWNLOAD ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP HERE!

And you know the drill. I'm expecting 1-2 more updates before Banks/Utopia comes out.

Manual download in first post of course as usual.

Changelog for Version 1.3.7:
  • Added seven new namelists: Bosmer (TES), Diacritics 4 (Fantasy), Finnish (Handmade), Hutt (Star Wars), Imperial (Star Wars), Pirate (Fantasy), Zulu (Handmade)
  • Added Finnish, Hungarian, Mongolian, Thai, Turkish names to CANS’ human namelist
  • Fixed randomly generated species spawning with Hippie namelists in the course of the game

[Request] for a Pirate namelist (whether like the ones in game or like the sea baring ones) and a Knightly namelist

Threw together a Pirate namelist for this new update. Names were all madeup fantasy names so I could use them to generate AI empires, but I hope that's what you're looking for. I'll see if I can do a stereotypical noble fantasy knight namelist for the next update then.

I noticed that the Finnish names are made up (which you already know), but many of them are also grammatically incorrect and it would thus be impossible for such names to appear in the Finnish language even in a fictional setting. Most of the names also sound extremely stupid to anyone who knows Finnish. To fix this, I have created my own Finnish name list that you can use to replace the current one. https://www.dropbox.com/s/7euyqq2jzm41z2g/real_finnish_qweytr.txt?dl=0

Incorrect grammar is also kinda intentional, the names are inspired by Finnish, not meant to actually resemble the Finnish language (and this is more or less true with all of the namelists I make that are not marked as real), like how, say, the Imperial names in Elder Scrolls are inspired by Roman names but also have elements that would probably be nonsensical to actual Latin-speakers. The names were made using a Markov generator anyways so there's that, haha.

That said, I'm not going to ignore a namelist when it's handed to me for free. Are these FInnish names actual real Finnish names, or just fictional Finnish names that happen to follow Finnish grammatical conventions?

The names in my list are all real.

Due to how the Finnish language works Markov generators don't really work for generating pseudo-Finnish, at least not if it's taken from random text. I understand if you don't want to discard work that's already done, but if you want a pseudo-Finnish fantasy names it would be a better idea to use the Markov generator on a list of actual names rather than a list of random words. You can use my name lists for that.

Thanks, I'll throw that in the next update then, less work for me the better. :p I'm fine with pseudo-Finnish names not aligning well with actual Finnish. My Chinese 1 namelist, the two Japanese namelists, and the Byzantine namelists, off the top of my head, are also other examples of namelists that don't actually align too well with their real life inspirations, and they weren't made using Markov generators - again, it's more the inspiration, i.e. "hey these aliens speak a language that sounds French-ish/Russian-ish/Arabic-ish etc." so it would only seem nonsensical to people who know the real-life languages well. As these are all fantasy, they are not reuqired to follow actual grammatical rules of real-world languages; if I were making a pseudo-Englihs namelist (which actually I probably should eventually), I'd be throwing in random English words too at any rate, so basically it's not Finnish that's unique in this regard. I know the names I use are a bit confusing because people ask me questions about it all the time, as it's meant for my own personal organization, but basically only namelists marked as "real" on the list (i.e. not "fantasy", "handmade", or the fictional franchise it's from) would ideally have to follow real-world conventions (I have renamed your namelist to "real_finnish" instead of "handmade_finnish" for instance). Anyways, I can probably do a second Finnish namelist too that uses a Markov generator on a list of actual names.

VERSION 1.3.8 IS UP - DOWNLOAD ON THE STEAM WORKSHOP HERE!

Same thing as always, probably 1-2 more updates after this one. Actually, no wait, not - I got a little something different.

I've now edited the vanilla human namelists to include all the real names that are in CANS' human namelist. I am still keeping CANS' human namelist for those like me who prefer a mishmash of both UN and Commonwealth of Man namelists, but at least now if you're playing as the prescripted UN or Commonwealth of Man, you will now see a bigger variety of names from around the world. Though I am editing the vanilla files dealing with the human namelists, this will only cause minor incompatibility with any mod that edits the human namelists - I believe that the game will simply have one replace the other.

Here's a couple of screenshots showing the greater variety of names for the UN and Commonwealth of Man:

Manual download in first post of course as usual.

Changelog for Version 1.3.8:

  • Added five new namelists: Abstract 1 (Handmade), Abstract 2 (Handmade), Ethiopian (Handmade), Finnish (Real) (Credits to qweyt), Redguard (TES)
  • Added Congolese, Dutch, Ethiopian, Jewish (Ashkenazi), Jewish (Sephardi), Swahili, Yoruba, and Zulu names to CANS’ human namelist
  • Added names from CANS’ human namelists to the vanilla human namelists so now all the new names will show up with the vanilla prescripted United Nations of Earth and the Commonwealth of Man (however, I keep the CANS human namelists for those who want a larger namelist)
  • Replaced vanilla African namelist with Congolese namelist since the African one was just a mishmash of random African names

Does anyone know for certain whether this is achievement compatible. I'd love to use this but I don't have any fast achievements that I can get to test it.

I don't play ironman/achievements as I use too many mods, so I'm not 100% certain, but I suspect not. My mod adds in quite a substantial amount of code (very simple, easy to type code, but code nevertheless), so I suspect it would not have the same checksum as vanilla.

I must still have an old version as it keeps saying not compatible with game version 1.4.1 (it says the mod version is version 1.2.)

Am I supposed to download a different version every time you do an update to it? Just making I need to do as I'm puzzled as to why it's not working.

Also is it possible to copy and paste certain name lists in case one which to use specific name lists?

Are you using the steam workshop version or the manual download? If the former, try unsubscribing and resubscribing to the mod (or all your mods to be safe) - this includes deleting all files in the mods folder in your documents. If the latter, yes, you will need to redownload again every time I update. That said, if it's a more recent version (after Heinlein I think when they changed a bit of the way the namelist code works), the mod should still work fine even if it says it is outdated, as the code isn't particularly crazy or anything. A lot of mods are like that, to be honest, it's more a warning than an actual guarantee that the mod is incompatible.

Also is it possible to copy and paste certain name lists in case one which to use specific name lists?

I'm not sure what you mean by this, can you explain?
