Portraits and Ethnicities Expanded is now known as Ethnicities and Portraits Expanded.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few months back, Xangelo known for his great unit packs in previous PDX games such as Imperator Rome, Europa Universalis had set forth in Crusader Kings III wanting to bring vast diversity to the world, eventually uniting with Celticus, known for his works over on the Total War modding communities. Months would go by as we slowly but surely added dozens and dozens of Ethnicities to the world of CK3.

Today I wish to announce the development and progress of Portraits and Ethnicities Expanded

    Logo.png

Portraits and Ethnicities Expanded looks to revamp all the current Ethnicities of the world, along with adding many new ethnic groups across the world that we felt were unfairly not included; often making late-game CK3 consist of characters map-wide, more or less looking the same in the end. We also look to add various cultural clothing, patterns, headgears, and hairstyles to help us more accurately represent these ethnic groups as they would.

Within this mere announcement, we would like to show you what we have, as I feel images sometimes speak more than words, especially in this case, but for note, what is shown below is not the whole extent of what we have to offer, and is just a random selection of such - it is also to note that as we add more and lean closer to a release any of the following are mere previews and are subject to change visually, localization-ly. Hope you like the images!

And these Ethnicities aren't only for males either, all of these ethnicities were handcrafted for both sexes. (Most screenshots above were the only male for the sake of not needing to possibly censor, I'm not sure PDX's rules on such on the forums.)

A reminder that all is subject to change as this is a work in progress, with further development of hair and further ethnicity templates, much can change.

    Portraits

Now, what's the "Portraits" section of the name? Well, that's where we dive into making various cultural clothing, patterns, headgear, and Hair for the people map-wide.

    The Evolution of Chainmail

For those playing on high-quality settings, it might have been easy to spot the poor quality of PDX's chainmail on some of the otherwise great models throughout, so currently some of those have been upgraded also.

    Comparison of Chainmail.png

Various Portraits from around the world, including some ethnicities, new patterns, some custom models (like the kettle hat above), and more! (What isn't custom, is just vanilla CK3, to show how well everything blends).

And finally, that is all I have to show off today, and that was a LOT of stuff shown!

If you wish to follow progress, I'll post it in many other discords also but the first and best place to follow progress, help with historical sources, talk with the developers of P&EE is over on our new discord!

Update - 2020, 12, 15. More Crown and Circlet Varierty!
  • Crown.png

In our goals for adding tons of diversity to Portraits and Ethnicities Expanded, we are also adding a good few miscellaneous crowns to the world of CK3, - fewer chances of holding a crown upon your head while fighting an enemy holding the same crown upon his!

    Update - 2021, 01, 16. Dev Diary #2
  • WIP - Update #1

Hey everyone, Celticus here (Primary 3D Modeler and Texture Artist), I wanted to update those interested on the progress we have made so far. Our team has been hard at work since we created the initial posting and preview images and the following will be a guide of that work.

    Quickie #1 - Ethnicities

Optimizations to the ethnicities has occurred on and off the the last couple months. We slowed down during the holiday season and ramped back up once our schedules opened up. We plan to include new variants and permutations of ethnicities over time. New templates can be added post-release at any time so the AI has a diverse range of appearances.

Quickie #2 - Vanilla Mix and Match

One of the nice things about CKIII is that there is a slew of vanilla models that can be mixed and matched into more historical permutations. We have tried to use as many PDX assets as we can with our first round of variety additions. Take for example the Byzantine Imperial Headgear, by combining some nobility and imperial assets, we now have more variations for the lovely Empresses of Byzantium.

    unkno234w435n.png

Plenty of other permutations and alterations are visible in our initial post. We will continue to devise creative ways to mix and match content for that little extra flavor.

    Quickie #3 - Italian Patterns!

Xangelo has designed some new patterns for the Italian culture. Lets show it!

    unkno2132344636463wn.png

    Quickie #4 - Headgear Extravaganza!

We have created an assortment of new circlets and crown variations for our Western European cultures. This should hopefully diversify the nobility of your kingdom. There are many many more to show off once they are ready.

    u3124253267134nknown.png

Our team is also trying to bring some of the iconic symbols of royalty to life. One piece is the Crown of Charlemagne, likely made for Charles the Bald as a banded style crown, Fleur were added later as well as a center cap. For the time being we have our King rank version to show off!

    131234241313123433232354.png
    Untitl234366743ed.png

We have also added many permutations for women for the 11th and 12th centuries. Veils and gorgets were frequently worn by the married common folk and nobility. Here are some examples featuring our new selection of circlets, veil and gorget combinations, as well as a new female royalty cloak.

Cultural Flavor and 3D Work #1 - Iranians

Our initial work following the vanilla mix and match focused on the Iranian peoples. We wanted to give them a more distinct look from their Arabic neighbors and try capture their distinct cultural influence. I first started by trying to diversify their war gear and hope the results are enjoyed. These are a series of Early Middle Ages Iranian helmets that have been created:

    f7588w2343qj213b123t31.jpg
    f7588w2343qj4213b123t31.jpg

By modifying and mixing various facial hairs and styles, we also have given them a bit more variety in their appearances. Xangelo has been hard at work on their clothing patterns as well giving them some fashionable diversity.

    u345nkno234wn.png

Men are not the only ones who have added content. Iranian women have more diversity through their patterns as well as one of the fun experiments we have worked on.
Makeup! Unfortunately due to game limitations it is not select able on its own and so it randomizes with each spawning character. From our research many women across the map chose to lighten their faces with chalk and other materials alongside the use of kohl around the eyes, blushes and lip balms and coloring. They are being optimized so they fit in properly but here is a preview shot of our work

    unk23436465747own.png

The cosmetics are assignable through traits, rank, and other modifiers so we will look into the best system to accommodate it. We are excited to see what we can do with these systems.

Cultural Flavor and 3D Work #2 - Turkic Peoples

We have made progress on diversifying the Turkic peoples and finally have more work to show! Xangelo has been hard at work on creating patterns and new hairstyles for the Seljuks and Persian influenced Turkic peoples of the 1066 start.

    unk4n2342525own.png

Expect to see more of this culture later!

That's all we have to show off for now! Please stay tuned and be patient. We want to release a sizable mod with plenty of content as an initial release and are working to get there as soon as possible. Remember all of this is a Work in Progress and subject to change at any time. Until next time!

    FAQ

Why doesn't "X" culture have the items I see in the screenshots!?
    • For the full experience it is recommended to have the DLC's for CK3 as they assist us inbuilding flavor for the cultures. It is not required, but large portions of the map will remain vanilla without them.
So what does this mod do again?
    • Creates more realistic ethnicities and diversity among the various cultures of CK3.
Why doesn't "X" culture have a specific item?
    • This mod covers a vast portion of the CK3 map and as a result we have had to paint it with a broad brush with focus on only a few cultures at launch. More items will be available in the future.

My culture or one I like isn't represented right! What gives!
    • We will elaborate on our policy regarding ethnicities and cultural representation in a Discussion post. For FAQ, know that we respect all cultures and aim to do the best we can to represent each one as authentically as we can.

Where is "X" asset I saw in the WIP or Preview Pictures?!
    • Some assets made it into the initial release and some did not. Everything you saw will be either replaced or imported into the mod eventually so please be patient with our team as we want you to have those assets too!

What is coming next for this mod?
    • We are actively working on creating a Trello and are already designing our first major content release post-launch. Stay tuned for more info down the road!
