I rarely play with vanilla portraits. My favorite set is the anime portraits mod, even in the Alps :p

haha same here. I loved their portraits they had when they ware still drawn...but...these 3d are horrible.
too bad nobody made a normal drawing portraits mod.

anyway love the mod so far.

one Q: why counties are now Lord? instead of maybe Baron?

Looks very good!

thanks you both^^

...still waiting for someone to port CK1 portraits to CK2... (not very possible with that large map we have in this game though... but it could work in LCDA :p )

Looks like "Lord" is the correct word. The land is called "Seignory"

To all, let me know if there are some specific info you'd want (if I can answer of course, depending on the development status of things).

How are going to implement 'inlanrd republics'
Inland republics will be "false" merchant republics. We can make republics playable without this but it doesn't as much interest without the 5 families/factions system.
Since they will inland, they won't get trade post. So it have to be a bit creative to have this worth playing. Being a pseudo merchant republic also induces to be duke tier.

The feature is a bit far from being designed ATM but i can say it will get a lot of inspiration from Swiss history. It is also linked to some changes I am planning for L3T in regard to how cities work, to integrate the concept of urban developement and emancipation that occured during the period (and definetly not in 769/867/ or even 1066 like vanilla !).
Mind that Swiss confederacy wasn't very peacefull, it fought -military speaking- a lot for its indepenpancy, was a conqueror of some sort. Try googling "when swiss was badass". ;)

So here are various ideas.

Diplomacy :
The swiss confederacy was a bunch of alliances of various types that make it grew and consolidate over time. This alliances system, as a diplomatic feature will be a nice part IMHO, and a headache for opponments :D This could lead to other confederacy or leagues emerging dynamicaly, like some did historicaly (Elsass Decapolis f.e. ).
This alliances concept is quite advanced in terms of design and I lead some testing already, I'll give you a dev diary about it when fully fleshed.

Specificities :
Republics will have some distinctions with various governement types and/or laws pushing play style in various directions.

For example awar-oriented state will be allowed various specific CB. On the opposite, it could restrict CB. For exampl, if applied to vanilla merchant republics, it would limit them to coastal city conquest, not allowing them to conquer further the province. This illustrates the degrees we can have here.

The families, when technicaly staying families (no real alternative here sorry), could incarnate in some way a faction like a job corporation or commercial "company". I've also imagined a sort of pirate/bandits city but it would be hard to achieve i guess.
Trade could still be a possiblity if i implement static roads à la silk road, but i am not decided yet about it for LCDA.
All in all, the scheme could be to have a republic-style or focus for each main attribute.

With those two main aspects it should give a viable system that i hope will bring some freshness in gameplays.

I'd love to hear your ideas by the way ;)

Some small flavour today

LCDA_donation_artifact.png

It is based on original donation text. This text is likely authentic, with likely some tweaks from the copist-monks... in there favor because the text is questionably generous in terms of freedom...
Anyway, I'll try to bring such flavour when I have the sources for the mod, sadly the text is much longer and I can't get it all there.
L3T will bring its own set of these, on the dynamic side ;)

Tonight, a bit of "behind the scene" of the mod development.

On the technical side, I am using various tools : Gimp for the map, Notepad++ for the code, paint.net for the graphic stuff (coats of arms, interface elements...), Github for versionning/sharings, Slack as a pillar of the team for discussions, trello for project advancement.
Slack also traces all that is done on Github and Trello.

Most are well known tools for most modders I guess, Trello is maybe a bit less commly used but is a really nice tool. So let's show what is it and what it looks like for LCDA project.

There is obviously not real spoiler in there :p

Colonisation? In this setting?
Don't give too much importance to the wording but some "colonization" of forestland and moutains did happen in the region at this period.
As colonization you could be seen as a combination of land clearing+migration in the case of walser people.

Colonisation? In this setting?

There was plenty of settlement going on in Europe in the Middle Ages, e.g. in the Black Forest region, in Austria and so forth.

Let's make a Swiss anime movie then. ;)
Nice work @Arko I'm looking forward to it!

Cheers.

DRAWING THE MAP

Still a bit on the development tools side, let's talk about Border gore historical map conception.

To draw borders and find historical holdings for the mod, I am collecting a lot of data. I am retrieving all these into a google "My map".
For the Swiss region for example, a wonderful source is the trilingual "Historical dictionary of Switzerland" (DHS). It permits to affect almost the tiniest village to its medieval local power.

Let's see what it gives in the works.
LCDA_DD03_mapping1.png

Basically, orange castle are.. castles, blue neo-classic style icons are cities, purple "M" are monasteries, crosses are bishoprics, horses commandries, generic blue points geographical marks to help fixing borders or general infos.
All of these are entries with some data or links or even local maps.

LCDA_DD03_mapping2.png

To illustrate a bit further the process, here is how I "compose" a map province.
With keeping in mind the big scheme of historical bigger entities (counties) I have to divide into provinces, trying to keep their size province wise reasonnable (there will be quite diversity there though).
I am starting with local powers, trying to spot the important one(s) within an area.
Then trying to scope their extension and possessions, those that could fit within their area, and secondary ones that could be within another province as a secondary holding f.e.).
The composed provinces can be more or less large or small, compact or not, depending of the powers fluctuating within the period in there. Usually tricky choices to do in terms of what representing and abstracting or ignore.
In above example example, at the north in purple area, you have the swiss city of Fribourg, a new city founded in 1157. There's no way it can be there from start before that date. So it does require to get a setup that fit the era before (with various lordships, imperial influence, bishop power etc.) and the era after until it became a free-city and a state as a swiss canton later on. A nice headache !

You don't know how hype Im to play this mod in my natal region the beautiful Valais. Im sure it will be great.
A lot of responsability weights on my shoulders then :p
I'll await the feedback from your expertise when you'll play there ;)

Still looking forward to this lol. I hope you rekindle your zeal for it!
I am quite out of the loop in regard to modding, for months now :/
