My first CK2 mod, where I've changed a few things to make the Italian Maritime Republics (IMRs) more enjoyable and historical.
Playing as Pisa, it made no sense that I had to declare on a Roman Emperor for a single trade post. The idea for this mod was to tweak Ragusa & Ancona. That led to the idea of independent IMRs, which led to a few good things.
Firstly, I made titular Empire titles. However, on succession, only the empire & county would pass... leaving a kingdom/duchy "stuck" to the prior doge's heir. (No idea why that happened). It also placed IMR brides/grooms way up the ledger, which was silly. So I made titular kingdoms, instead.
In playtesting, I saw that Ancona, Amalfi and Ragusa often formed IMRs in the early years of the game - ducal rank. I couldn't find a decision in the game files. The AI seemed to be creating titles that already existed. Doing some research, I decided to implement them as full IMRs for the 1066 start. Gaeta and Noli didn't make the cut; they didn't appear sufficiently independent.
Ragusa/Dubrovnik has an interesting history. I wanted them to feel a little safe in 1066, yet threatened by waning Roman power later. So their county left dejure Serbia, whilst their status changed to ERE Tributary. Giving Venice only a short wait before launching their many - many - attacks on the city-state. I found some extant Ragusan patrician dynasties, and gave them patrician baronies/made some new ones.
Amalfi was seemingly ready to go; the 1066 data was there but commented out. I had some trouble with the creatable titular duchy "sticking", but found a way around it.
Some side-discoveries: In 1066, Venice doesn't own it's ducal title - but can create it. And the County of Amalfi was missing it's de jure kingdom. I set it to Sicily for the 1066 starts, to encourage Norman interest.
Ancona was the most extensive. It had some interesting families in the game's files. I wanted a mix of Greek Orthodox and Italian/German Catholic patricians, for flavour. So I made some dynasties, with a little backstory to each. Anconan de jures encourage HRE and Papal interference.
I'm happy with how the mod plays so far. The IMRs resist vassalization, even from empires. By the time things start going crazy with Moldavian and Byzantine Separatist MRs, some IMRs are established enough to take them on - and the player is able to siege higher titles by that point.
To do / nice to have list. Easy to hard:

To do / nice to have list. Easy to hard:
- New events
- Research & give new IMRs 1066 trade posts
- Tweak elections. Give money diminishing returns to votes, perhaps increasing revolt modifier for successive dynasts
- Rework the Hansa. Maybe add other members so Visby isn't lonely
- Discourage patrician farming for trade posts. Could finagle there always being >2 male members for all patrician dynasties; add a scaling penalty for trade posts over the limit
- Rework Connected to Capital. Make it more intuitive - hopefully by spreading via same-MR different-dynasty trade zone adjacency
